New Channel 4 Anchor Can't Talk

I don't know where they found the new evening anchor at channel 4. But he can not get through a sentence. I have stopped watching Channel 4 at night because it kills me to here him continuously stumble over himself. I mean being in radio for 14 years I have stumbled during maybe one sentence during the news cast but it seems he stumbles over every sentence that he tries to get out. Your thoughts?

Why Channel 4 hired him is beyond me. No one could ever fill Dan Millers shoes, but if they needed another anchor they should have looked with in. Weekend Anchor Alan Frio is far better than Bob Sellars.

all a matter of taste, I guess: Frio is a nice guy, but he irritates me by "ad-libbing" some obvious comment
after every story ("oh my...that certainly is a large cupcake, Dennis").
and I agree...replacing Dan Miller is impossible.

I think he's a nice-enough guy, but yes, he stumbles way too often. Tom Randles or Aaron Solomon would have been a much better choice. They are both undervalued. The new weather guy, Paul Heggen is the best in town. Best one WSMV has had since Bill Hall.

When you have the impossible task of replacing a much beloved anchor, maybe you don't try so hard, because the first person in the position usually doesn't last long. Same is true for radio hosts, as WSIX will discover come mid-December.

Sellers did come here with great credentials, though, and some top-rung experience with CNBC and Fox News, as well as DC-area reporting and anchoring. Sometimes, though, success in a local TV market is less about experience and more about fit. Remember Fred Graham?

I agree with NashvilleNative, though, Aaron Solomon would have been a great choice. Would seem to fit well as a broadcast partner for Demetria as well.

Give Sellers a chance, though, maybe WSMV news producers need to work on his "fit".

Despite the constant mess-ups, you can't help but like the guy. I want him to do well. I think he's still trying to find his "zone" for humor at WSMV and is still in the awkward stage. It's interesting to watch because you never know what remark will follow.

I see him out in public all the time with his wife and two daughters. Seems like a nice, approachable, unassuming guy. The world isn't full of standout talent. He's a guy who has good resume and network background and probably can fill that job as well as anybody out there.
Whether tv or radio, all talent do their best when they feel good and positive and know they fit in. The constant comparing him to Miller is unfortunant but it might go better if his coanchor weren't so distant and independent. While professional, she can be cold and distant.
And considering that many nights the 6 30pm team actually beats the 6pm team, you'd think someone would be quietly saying "hey Demitra, lighten up."
Imagine the poor guy trying to replace House. It's market 44! Don't run everybody off. There ain't that many great talent on the sidelines waiting for the salaries currently being offered.

Well Jennifer and Randall are a great team for the 6:30 newscast. They are funny and come up with some really off the wall stuff. Also they can read the news without any mistakes. I'm sure that Bob is a nice guy but that has nothing to do with keeping your viewers watching and your ratings continuing to go up. If people can't stand to listen to the newscast they will turn the channel.

its funny you mention this -- but it seems to me its a lot of there anchors who stumble. alan frio and the weekend young lady (mornings) does a lot as well. made me wonder if theres something wrong with their prompter.

99 percent of all in-between story banter is scripted. Are you suggesting the 6:30 newscast has better writers?

It's scripted in the form of "[Aaron toss to Holly]" but that's about it. Really, most of what appears to be ad-libbed actually *is* ad-libbed. Often, to the frustration of producers who didn't allow enough time for extensive chatter...

In the early AM show, you can see for yourself by watching the closed captions, which are directly generated by the teleprompter.

(that doesn't work for the afternoon/evening shows where there's a court reporter writing the captions)

WKRN also has the teleprompter feed as their closed captioning...on most newscasts.
hey kids...for more CC fun...watch Headline News...their captioning is spelled out phonetically...some weird words show up

Nothing can top Deanna Lambert referring to Brigitte Bardot as "Bridgette BarDOTT" in a story about her! ;D Someone on set must have instantly corrected her because she said "BarDOUGH" in the very next reference! ;D

As far as that phonetic spelling on closed captioning, I recall seeing Jeanetta Jones' name showing up as "Judge Netta Jones" back when she was on the Weather Channel. Who knew that she was also a judge? ;D

Yeah, that *can* be interesting...

Live captions are written on the same machines as court reporters use. If you've ever seen one up close, you'll notice there aren't 26 keys. The whole thing is done on a phonetic basis. Live captioners have a "dictionary" -- a file on their PC that maps phonetic sequences to properly-spelled (we hope) words.

When a word comes up that isn't in the dictionary... we have a problem. They still write it phonetically but now the computer can't find a proper translation & it just passes through the phoneme. (or spits out the closest word it can find)

Captioners' dictionaries are a rather personal thing, I suppose like an announcer's favorite set of headphones, only more so.

Caption data can be delivered to the encoder over a regular dialup phone line. This means the captioner handling a show can be located just about anywhere. The risk this brings up... is of a backup captioner being 2,500 miles away... and having never heard of Demonbreun or Ooltewah or Maury or .....

Well drive to Memphis, Knoxville or Chattanooga and look at any anchor, anyday, and all the Nashville anchors look like network feeds compared to "peer" cities. With the exception of WZTV of course. Stories keep circulating about the morning news guy (nick) on the poor man's version of Regis & Kelly (whatever their names are on TN Mornings) being live the other day and not knowing his mic and camera were on him. He burped, loud and live. Broke up the set. All 8 viewers have been talking about it. Good ole Fox 17. Taking the market to new lows daily.
