New CHR coming to Saskatoon

Murray Lyons, The StarPhoenix
Published: Tuesday, May 29, 2007

Regina's Harvard Broadcasting will have an opportunity to prove whether a traditional commercial radio station in Saskatoon can recapture a good segment of the youth market, which appears to have tuned out of local radio and is listening to music downloaded to MP3 players.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced Monday that Harvard, owners of three radio stations in the Regina market, is the only new applicant to be allowed to open a commercial radio station in Saskatoon.

Michael Olstrom, Harvard's general manager, says the new Saskatoon station -- which will play contemporary pop, rock and "urban" or rap music aimed largely at 14 to 24-year-olds -- could be on the air late this year. However, he says other company commitments to a new radio station in Fort McMurray will likely mean the new station won't hit the airwaves until early 2008.

The calls for Harvard's new Saskatoon station at 92.3 will be CHZN. One might guess that it will be known as "The Zone".

Actually they never did officially use the CHZN calls on air at 102.9 in Edmonton. Just before the station hit the air the calls were changed to CHDI.

Ah, thanks! Now I understand. I guess at the last second, sonic felt that that name would be better than zone. (less cookie cutter feel to the sonic name, I'm guessing...)
