New CHR for Cedar Rapids

KRQN Cedar Rapids has changed formats, flipping from Classic Hits to CHR i107.1. It seems to have a Rhythmic lean, but still within the Mainstream CHR category. Now Cedar Rapids listeners have access to 4 CHRs. The heritage KZIA Z102.9 and three owned by Cumulus Media; i107.1, KBEA B100 Quadi Cities and KKHQ Q92.3 Waterloo.

Now this should be interesting. I don't think it is a good move. KRQN was not doing too bad considering weak coverage.

KZIA has a very loyal and dedicated listener base. Taking on KZIA will be a difficult fight that I don't see them winning. Not to mention that KRQN does not reach Coralville nor Iowa City with acceptable coverage. It is only sort-of listenable in Iowa City. Without good Iowa City coverage, KRQN is not going to get anywhere. This is one of the things holding back KKSY (among many, many, other things.)

After taking some time to see what happens, the format change was a terrible move. Why bother trying to go up against KZIA when every single song they play can be heard on KZIA. There are portions of Cedar Rapids where KKHQ in Waterloo comes in better than KRQN. A more Rhythmic format might have had a better shot at gaining some traction as it would be something different. Another case of a edict that come down from people in Atlanta at the Corporate level that don't really understand the market.

Speaking of KKSY, I wonder if the changes about to take place in upper management will affect the future of that station. Sounds like John Laton quit rather than be forced to cut at his stations even more, though I don't know how much more they can cut at Clear Channel Cedar Rapids/Iowa City/Quad Cities. The man has principles, which I can respect.

The format change does not seem to be making much traction. I have heard more people upset about the change than have been in favor of it. The only way I can see them making a serious swing at KZIA is if they change KDAT or KRNA. I can't see them changing either of those, however after this decision who knows what they may try.

It is very possible. I think Clear Channel will give up on the station within the next year. Their programming on the station has held it back. New Country simply does not have the pull they expected in Cedar Rapids. Although the station also suffers from technical difficulties rather regularly, as I have mentioned in other threads.

Yep! Exactly right. A Rhythmic format would have probably been a better choice to gain listenrs and make better waves AGAINST KZIA. right now they are just duplicating exactly whats already in the market on a bigger signal.

It seems so far this station has gone nowhere. I have yet to hear any hype over it, as expected. In fact I have yet to meet anyone who listens to it at all.

Clear Channel and Cumulus seem to be fighting over who can run the worst performing class A station for Cedar Rapids. Cumulus seems to be giving Clear Channel a good run with the new KRQN, but KKSY still has them beat. It's been buffering constantly for days. Who wants to listen to a station that sounds like it is buffering every so many seconds? KKSY is just a pile of crap.
