New CHR for DFW?

CBS is having success with the new CHR Amp 97.1 (All The Hits) in LA. They are going head-to-head with KIIS and already racking up some impressive early numbers.

Weekly cume (6+) is already up to 2,209,400 listeners, 6th in 18-34, 5th in 18-34 women. Pretty impressive considering they have only been around since Feb. 20th...

I know Movin tried and failed but their formula was different... I think an "Amp" or "Now" station could make a serious dent in KHKS (KISS FM) here. What do you think?

If CBS is going to do this here, they could put it on 100.3. Because that station is already jockless.

Any format can do well if it is executed correctly (right music, right airstaff, marketing and promotions, contests, etc.) What we are dealing with here and now are companies that are running stations on a bare bones (no pun intended) budget. Cumulus cut 93.3's budget as soon as they acquired it. There is no money there. Then you have the signal issue. Then you have a Program Director who has spent the last 15 years with a sports format.

If CBS Dallas were to attempt a CHR on 105.3, I would think the odds of success would be better (if the above mentioned factors were in place). I doubt they are going to go that route, though, since they just brought in Tom Bigby.

Jack's numbers are pretty good and the demo is entirely different from that of a CHR. They are making money without the expense of an airstaff. It would be non productive to make a change there. The Fan is the station that is near rock bottom and needs to do something.

Do you think they should put this format on KDBN?

I don't think any format is going to work on that frequency due to the lack of signal and lack of money needed to re-brand it entirely.

Agree that Jack seems to be doing OK. Not top of the market but doing fine with minimal expenses, no need to change.
As an admitted top 40 pop fan I just cannot listen to Kiss, just themed too much toward R&B and rap and not pop.

There is an opening in this market for a straight up pop station. 105.3 seems like a logical choice, but then again, logic and radio rarely go together.

Yes, this could be very true. I have sources at CBS that tell me they are planning this. It will be a NOW or AMP or HOT or something like that. They are using the market to determine how Rhythmic the station should sound or how AC. It could have a totally new name, dance maybe?...we will see. :-X

105.3, I wish...actually I think we all do. Corporate is very serious about 105.3 so I wouldn't expect that to change anytime TOO soon. Be listening to 98.7 and 103.7. Those will be the stations to follow in the coming weeks. Which one will it be...

I still think 98.7. Cash cow or not, isn't oldies a dying format anyway?

Oldies (industry defined as 60'sa based music) is a tough sell as it is demographicall out of the salable demos for the most part. Classic hits defined as 70's based music, is an easier sale as the demos are predominantly under 55.

Oldies are oldies, no matter how you define it. I am surprised that 70s music seems to be the primary focus. That decade was 30 years ago. The format should be heavy on 80s now. I know 80s formats have already been tried, but in my opinion the timing was all wrong. The best time to begin an 80s music focus, should have begun after say 2005, not the 1990s.

Didn't 105.3 just switch to sports recently? It doesn't seem logical to blow off a station that hasn't had a chance to get its feet wet.

Where have you been? Sleeping?

I don't see 103.7 switching because that would open up Clear Channel to put on a new AC station. Shall we say 97.1 which right now is not doing real well. I think 103.7 will stay as is.
