New CHR For Pensacola and Mobile - I-100

They've tried this already with WYOK.

And once before on 100.7! This is the fourth attempt between both WYOK 104.1 and WJLQ 100.7.

IF they stick with superserving the Mobile/Baldwin County area, I think they've got a shot this time.

They were succeeding until hurricane Ivan knocked them off the air for a couple of weeks. For some reason they couldn't recover from that. I guess they are trying to redeem themselves with this station.

Does anyone have a list of other markets with the I brand?

I know of Nashville and Indy.. any others?

just got back from the gym and they had i100 playing over the main speakers - it always PLAYED 97.5 WABB

Everytime I here them say I-100 I keep waiting to hear them say WOKI Oak Ridge-Knoxville,, East Tennesee's 100 thousand watt hot rocking flame thrower... BTW, for those that dont know, the original I-100 who I assume cumulous model's the name after came from Knoxville Tennessee Circa 1988-1993.

Don't forget about I-100 from Daytona Beach. They were really big in the mid 80s, and had a huge signal that covered parts or Orlando, a good signal into Ocala and Gainesville, and a pretty good signal into Jacksonville.

Chrles what was the station I used to here in Disney world on a walkman,, it was 93.7 I think,, it was when FLZ was still oldies, and Q-105 was still chr... 93.7 was dance friendly but also played country artists like Randy Travis,,, unheard of at the time.

That would be Z-93.7 out of Ocala. I guess Gainesville had 3 CHRs at the time - Kiss 105.3 (still around today), Z-93.7, and I-100.
I'm surprised Kiss 105.3 still doesnt reach Ocala after all these years.
Anyways, you've got a good memory - I too distinctly remember Z-93.7 playing some Country.
There were a lot of great CHRs back then. BJ 105 was an amazing CHR/Pop for Orlando, and very similar sounding to Miami's Y-100. There was also Y-106 (today's XL 106.7) though its ratings were nowhere near those of BJ 105.
In the Disney World area (Lake Buena Vista) you could always pick up so many CHRs. It was like a CHR amusement park. LOL, think about it - even today you can easily pick up 93.3 FLZ and 107.1 A1A alongside XL 106.7 in the Disney World area.

Oh, another thing I remember about I-100 was that it was very big on Recurrents. Its powers were usually songs that were starting to drop on the national charts. It was also very Rock friendly. I remember them being all over songs like "Edge of a Broken Heart" by Vixen, and Europe's
Superstitious". Their slogan was "The boss of Daytona".
It was a bit confusing though b/c you in 1988 had Y-100 in South Florida and Hot 105, then heading into central FL you'd still have a CHR at 105.1 with BJ 105, and you'd hear a station called I-100 :p
Other Florida CHRs from that era: 95.5 WOVV West Palm Beach (debuted in 88), Z-93 Ft. Pierce (debuted in 89), Wail 99 Key West, 107.1 WIIS Key West (Rock friendly), Wink 97 Ft. Myers, 93.7 The Laser Naples, Q-105 Tampa, and of course Power 95 Jacksonville.

I'm also familiar with Knoxville's I-100, which had huge huge ratings in the late 80s/early 90s.

IIRC I-100's slogan was "The Boss of the Beach" and I remember hearing them in an around Disney world too. I recall Z93.7 after they droped the .7 as WMMZ Z93. I have station Id's from ALL the stations you mentioned :) I could upload 1 or 2 if anyone really wants to hear em.

The only time I was ever able to listen to I-100 Knoxville was an odd expeirence. They sounded like a decent CHR during the day but when I listened after midnight, they were playing some sort of AAA rock format. It struck me as quite odd. This would of been when Candyman had his song "knockin boots" out. 1990 I guess. I recall recording that song off of Y107 on that same vacation/trip.

Nashville used to have a good chr on 104.5 as well, during the Y-107 era.

That would be WWKX "Kicks 104" (CHR in the early and mid 80s and then became rock leaning CHR "Rock Hits 104" later in the 80s). Also, Nashville had a 3rd short lived CHR in the mid 80's as well (rhythmic leaning WZKS "96 Kiss", now home of Jack FM.) That was a cool time in the mid 80's because Nashville had 3 great, full market CHR's for awhile. (Kind of like the current situation with The River, I 106, and Party).

I'm very lucky to have The river, I-106, and The Party here in town.
As I'd suspected several months back, The Party evolved into a full fledged Rhythmic CHR in the past couple of months due in part to its ratings, and due in part to I-106. To me The Party sounds great so I hope they stick around.
I'm beginning to see TV ads for I-106, which means they do want to be a serious player in the market. Both I-106 and The Party are at a major disadvantage though when compared to The River - their signals are spotty in some of the most densely populated parts of the metro area. Additionally, The folks at The River know the market inside and out, and its a CHR with some of the best imaging and jingles in the country.

The announcement of a local airstaff surprised me. Scott Adams and JoJo Morales are very good jocks. I'm not familiar with Terry Simmons, so I won't comment on him, but this could end up being a very interesting little battle with WABB. It's certainly a good thing for both markets and for the CHR format, overall.

Seems all these Cumulus I-'s are in markets that already have CHRs. All 4 debuted as secondary CHRs - why use the same branding though all at once? So if they don't all work out for their audiences, the whole thing will be a blow.
