New CHR In NY and LA

Started hearing rumours that CBS was going to change formats to CHR in LA and NYC this week or very soon. Anyone hear anything about this? What stations would they change if they did? No idea if its true.

Also heard Clear Channel would possibly respond to challenge by launching a News Talk on FM in New York. KSYR would go head to head against KROQ. Also put an Urban in Atlanta and bring back an AC in Dallas.

Wanted to find out if anyone has heard anything about this or if this is all rumour mill.

Thanks

Don't know about New York, but if there's any sort of substance to this rumor you've been hearing about, the L.A. properties owned by CBS most likely to see change are Talk station, Free FM (97.1) or heritage Smooth Jazzz outlet, 94.7 The Wave (which has an AMAZING signal!).

KYSR Radio 98.7 is already going head to head with 106.7 K-Rock, though KYSR is more crossover sounding. Emmis should seriously contemplate dumping the Triple A format they've put in place on 101.9 in New York, and go instead with something similar to Radio 98.7.

Over in the ATL I could see CC dumping the Country format on 94.9 The Bull, which is under performing. It's one of the best signals in the market, and seeems to be going to waste. Still, Why would CC launch an Urban in the ATL, a market that already has some great Urbans? Would it combat heritage V-103, or the more aggressive Hot 107.9? Or maybe to give Rhythmic CHR 95.5 The Beat some stiff competition with a Rhythmic that has a far superior metro-wide signal?

This story is now all over AllAccess.com and Radio & Records.
The changes to CHR may be happening as soon as this Friday, or sometime next week!

There's also talk and speculation on AllAccess that CBS properties in cities like San Francisco and Detroit may be going CHR.
Stay tuned, chime in, and enjoy 8)

It's rumor no more here in L.A... the change is happening on Friday @ 5pm!!!

I thought it was longer then 15 years for both KIIS-FM and Z-100.

Les, you're probably right.  It also has to do with being competitive as a cluster. 98.7 fragmented CBS's cash cow: KROQ, so now CBS wants to fragment CC's cash cow: KIIS.  KIIS has great numbers which are better than the diary.  However, unless CBS is going to market this and promote the heck out of it (in nontraditional means as well), this could be a tough battle.  KIIS has been attacked before and survived.  They lean rhythmic (because the market is VERY Hispanic), so CBS may sense a hole for CHR.  PPM has also shown that with a stable panel (not huge turnover week to week as with the diary), it will be about influencing those KIIS listeners.

Great for L.A., though I'm not crazy about the Amp name. Also, if CBS does plan on creating more CHRs in other cities, I hope they don't to what Clear Channel did with the Kiss stations.

I'm surprised the Virgin Radio brand, that's recently been sweeping across Canada, hasn't made its way to the States yet.
