New CHR/Rhythmic Station ! 93.5 The Beat.. Champaign-Urbana IL

;D ;D ;D ;D!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if they'll go the way of Amp Radio type Rhythmic or sound more like a Hip-Hop/Urban Leaning Rhythmic.

I listened for a few hours this evening. It's definitely more of a pop-leaning Rhythmic. It actually is surprising because they have Mainstream CHR Q96 in that same building. Q has been hurting for awhile though. Maybe they purposely are programming The Beat this way to compete with Q. So Q listeners listen to The Beat and vice-versa. Or Q could be going away soon... either way this is a great station.

Wow why can't this market have a FULL-fledged Urban with no pop?

Thats it! Hot 105-5 needs to

1. Drop Steve Harvey and sign Rickey Smiley asap, or else really go local in the AM. Because local works better above syndication.
2. Drop ALL the pop tracks
3. Change their imaging to a real urban sound

This doesn't look good for 107-9 Jamz, between Q96 and the Beat, there's only so much advertising $ to go around. These are 3 CHR sounding stations.

The Beat and 107-9 Jamz are identical, pop-rhythmic and they both will attack Q96... which was originally falling in #'s over Hot 105-5.

But this market was due for an urban for YEARS, why the hell did it take them so long to get one! I remember trying to listen to 1580 WBCP thru the static just to jam, and then WEFT with the daypart-programming on the weekends. Now everyone wants to jump on it. talk about LATE!

One of these stations will fall..... And my guess will be 107-9 or 93-5

Unless Hot decides to pull the plug, I'd hate to see that. They ARE the weakest signal. But much like in Memphis, Hot 107-1 was very Rap/Hip Hop with no R&B and they whopped Power 99, a 100kw blowtorch a few years back.

I haven't listened to Hot in awhile. I didn't realize they also played Rhythmic. There's no sense for 3 rhythmics and a CHR.

WUIL - Rhythmic
935 The Beat- Rhythmic
Hot 1055 - Rhythmic
Q96 - CHR

Okay so we know WUIL could be going away soon. Still.... two rhythmics. Wouldn't it make sense for Hot (the more urban-leaning station) to go full-blown Urban?

The reason why a number of stations hesitate going full-fledged urban is due to the lack of black population in the market that usually are the target audience of such programming. If the market's black population is less than 5% then it highly unlikely and financially unwise to attempt and just remain rhythmic for the sake of making money.

3 rhys? I think I need to move there

Why don't you just come to Phoenix?

KKFR - rhythmic
KZON - Rhythmic
KZZP - rhythmic top 40
KAJM - rhythmic oldies
KVIB - latin rhythm

and then there's Movin that is now leaning pop rock and pop hits from back in the day and today.

As far as people going urban today in 2010, hmmm.... If you're doing classic hip hop to cover the biggest hip hop hits of the hip hop era (Which has now come to an end), then yes, maybe that's a good idea for an urban format. Just like rock n roll, jazz, blues, disco...etc, the hip hop era has now passed. This doesn't mean that there are no more hip hop songs being made, it just means that the next big sound of the next generation will be the next big thing for the younger generation of 2010-2019. Don't worry though, because the hip hop generation is still around. The only thing is that they are now the PARENTS. This will help to make hip hop lose cred as well, by the way.

Unless you're in an urban heavy city, don't look for any new urbans to come soon. I should probably also explain this in the Los Angeles area where some people are getting outta their minds over Power 106 www.power106.com ... a few people hate on it, but I like how they format their station. The only problem is their "Where Hip Hop Lives" slogan that they refuse to let go of. But then again, technically, it does "live" there since they are the most urban out of all. This is not like WBTS being Atlanta's number 1 for hip hop when WHTA and WVEE are right there as well.

Anyway, I'm going to check out this Beat station. I wonder if they are really CHR/Rhythmic/Hip-Hop or CHR/Rhythmic/Pop? I'm thinking it sounds pretty decent though... but I bet they don't play Cascada.

By the way, classic hip hop? Well www.azthebeat.com

Better yet, try Honolulu:

Or Las Vegas:

KVBE - Dance
KVEG - Rhythmic
KLUC - Rhythmic
KFRH - Top 40
KOAS - Rhythmic AC

lol not really....
over 80% of urban music is bought by whites

anyways........ ::)

overall the reason why radio stations are scared to go urban is they dont know how to SELL and MARKET the station.

I agree with you about all of the above, but if there isn't a sufficient population base supported by numbers then station owner will not go "urban" in the sense of programming. One of the main reasons why stations like WZMX, WMBX, WPGC, WQHT, and KMEL (and the former pre-Radio-One-owned KKBT) have been successful is they market themselves as "rhythmic", but actually are urban in disguise. Just look at KDGS in Wichita, that station is an urban but fronts as a "rhythmic" in a majority white market.

NYC's got a lot:
92.3-Top 40-Now FM
96.3-Rhythmic/Spanish CHR-X 96.3
97.1-Hip Hop-Hot 97
100.3-Top 40-Z100
103.5-Dance-KTU
105.1-Hip Hop-Power 105.1

I've always wondered why if this old mid 90's saying still applies today, then why aren't there more urbans in non urban communities? Why would they buy it, but not listen to / support the stations playing the same sounds they are buying?

No "Full Fledged" Rhythmics though unless you like espanol.

Wow, after just 3 months? It looks like this station failed badly. How did it even do in the ratings?
