New CHRs

CHR returns to Duluth, Minnesota:

102.5 KZIO was the heritage CHR in the market in the 80s and 90s. The station segued to Modern AC in 1994 and completely flipped formats to Modern Rock in 1996. After several rock tweaks, most recently to Classic Rock for the last few years, the station has returned to its roots as of 8/30/10 with a CHR format billed as "102.5 KDWZ." These call letters are of course very similar to the legendary KDWB in Minneapolis. Several other Duluth stations borrow their monikers from Minneapolis stations and this is another example of this. 102.5 KDWZ will directly compete with Hot AC/Adult CHR hybrid "Mix 108" which airs a lot of non-CHR songs from 90s artists in particular. From the late 90s to the latter part of the last decade, 92.1FM in the same market flirted with the CHR format but never aired a format that would be instantly recognizable as CHR with jingles, music, imaging and other elements found on nearly all other American CHR stations. 102.5 is the only frequency in the market that has aired a long-running CHR format and now the format has returned there.

Add another CHR to the list as KMMX/Mix 100 Lubbock, TX has steered away from Hot AC to a more CHR direction. Slogan has switched from "Lubbock's Pop/Rock" to "Lubbock's Hit Music Station". Still has a slight adult lean, similar to Mix 93.3 Kansas City or My 99.9 Colorado Springs.

My 99.9 Colorado Springs switched back to Hot A/C awhile back. Its flirtation with CHR/Pop was short lived.

Add 101.9 Radio Now in Memphis to the list.

This station has actually been CHR for awhile now, but it has been in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Now Clear Channel has relocated it to West Memphis. I think CC will find success with this, as Memphis didn't have an actual Mainstream CHR, only Urban CHR.

As for CHR in Jonesboro, KIYS had a fringe signal at 106.3. Now it's moving to 101.7, and will provide a city-grade signal to both Jonesboro and Paragould.

Memphis has actually had a mainstream CHR for several years, WHBQ "Q107.5" (now also simulcasting on 96.1). www.q1075.com. Granted, they may not have had the best signal in the market, but I would certainly consider them a full market, Memphis station. Should be interesting to see how the Q107.5/Radio Now CHR war goes and who will wind up on top. Memphis is so heavily ethnic, that mainstream CHR hasn't done that well, and I would be surprised if the market will support both.

actually 101.9 KIYS in Jonesboro was 100kw at 1000ft. The signal downgraded and relocated to Memphis allowing KRLW 106.3 Walnut Ridge to relocate to the 101.9 Tower and move to 101.7. As of 09/16/2010 that signal has been known as KIYS.

The station in Memphis is basically a completely new station. Kiss FM remains the Jonesboro market CHR.

The new station in Memphis does not city grade the more affluent eastern suburbs. They are the important areas for CHR in this market. The competition does city grade those areas. Those areas are also very high RF areas and hearing a signal not located out there can be very tough on standard radios.

Taking all that into consideration it will be interesting to watch.

Memphis has 2 CHRs, a Hot AC, an AC. and a Gen X station right now.
