NEW Classic Country station in Youngstown, OH

There's a new "Farm" in Youngstown, Ohio

WRTK (1540) buyer Chris Lash says “my family are all farmers in and around Pittsburgh, so the format and name came from my many days working alongside my cousins and uncles, while listening to the radio in the barn.” The new format for WRTK, Niles, OH is classic country, under an LMA that begins today ahead of Lash and his wife Kathy acquiring WRTK and WANR (1570) from Beacon Broadcasting. The two stations had been simulcasting a Fox Sports Radio-based format, and WANR continues in that vein. The new “Farm” is already streaming online, continuing after the daytime-only WRTK must sign off. The stream is here at www.youngstownscountrylegends.com

This sounds like an interesting idea. The questions are will enough people in and around Youngstown et al tune the station in and can the signal reach enough of the outlying areas where this format might have a little more appeal?

Love the Classic format, but need to really promote the format and the fact that it does stream. My biggest audience is from the stream.

I hate to see the number of small to medium market AM stations going Talk. It would be alright if these stations would have some solid local shows to along with the net shows. There are several markets doing a very poor job with their local shows. WMOH in Hamilton is just one of many examples who have a very poorly done executed morning show. The host is always unprepared and sounds like it. I would much rather hear a locally connected air taent playing Classic Country.

The problem with many stations is finding a nationally talk show that is interesting. The Salem Talk network is a "B" or even some of shows are a "C." I for one would like to hear someone other than Rush or Sean.

I think a Country Classic format is a very strong format on the AM dial. Joe Mullins has found success with it and I think if someone buys WPFB AM they may want to bring back Classic Country as well.

That's fine for Dayton, Cincinnati and in-between, but what do you do in the Youngstown area?

That's fine for Dayton, Cincinnati and in-between, but for Youngstown it's irrelevant. Maybe WLOA (1470) which currently simulcasts WGRP (940) Greenville, PA can fill the void with a signal that blankets Youngstown both day and night with a halfway decent signal.
