New Clear Channel hires in Greenville

Interesting, MY with a "morning show". Should be interesting to see what it sounds like and how it fits with their "fresh" focus. Of course, I generally prefer more music and less talk, but I assume this will be an effort to appeal to their younger listener base.
I like more music and less talk too....that's one of the things I liked more about MY after they changed things around last summer. However, I feel that they have bigger issues to take care of (the music) that will impact the station's performance more, when it comes down to it.

I was surprised when I heard them play Kelly Clarkson's 'Stronger' this morning - there are songs quite ahead of that one on the charts they're still not playing during the day, and I thought it was funny that they're already playing that one. They're finally playing "Set Fire To The Rain", as well....but still too slow. They have gotten better about the 80s songs that were slow and out of place, but I still hear some odd ones occasionally when I listen.

Well,...well,...well,...I guess the readers, posters, and members of the Think Tank...wonder, ponder, from here...to over...yonder...just how I will reply to this thread????? Marv,...in addition to my black hat, I'll need the whip too...cuz evidently I'm gonna have to stripe some fanny meat, as I point out the undeniable truth,...+plus the truth to come!
In past rants, I had praised MY for flipping the format, as it was time, and someone on staff...gets it! I further added that one smart move without other ones to follow, the format flip, would be all in vain. Then, they Boobed during the ides of November, and (foolishly) went all Christmas. Now, you are going to take a blind run at a Morning show with someone who has no marque value in this market. It's nothing Personally,...but let birth the pure logic, and spank the solid truth, and cry-out what we all are thinking: "WHO IN THE FLYIN' FUDGECAKE IS ZAC MORGAN?"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Secondly, and I address this to the Think Tank,
Does anyone remotely believe that is will delivery the ratings,...as they so expect????????

Heck, how about Marne? Where did she come from several years ago? Other than Liz, I find their airstaff to be less than stellar. Liz worked at WSSL for quite a while before WMYI where she has been for years.

I don't know what station this guy even came from, either. I don't think it'll help them any. They can have the greatest airstaff in the world, but if the music is poorly programmed (which it is), they won't get anywhere. This really needs to be well programmed to work, or the listeners they have will defect to 93.7, 98.9, and 97.7 easily.

easily? really? 93.7 with an aging morning show that is losing touch to the demo they are trying to appeal to. 98.9 with whoever they can get to come in for 2 hours and call a morning show. 97.7 with no morning show. i am not a 102.5 listener anymore since they dropped the 70s but i do give the station credit for making some changes whether they are right or wrong.

Well, I don't know if any logic as far as the radio audience and/or program directors is concerned is "easy" to figure out no matter what the case.

But I do agree with carolinaradio that the music programming is going to make or break the station. Even if we are "armchair programmers", all it takes is a look around the country at other Hot AC stations to see that MY is at least a few steps behind when it comes to their new adds and strange insertions of songs that don't sound like they belong. Maybe we don't know the full story of why they're doing what they're doing. Only ratings will tell what lies ahead for the future of the station.

On these boards, though, all we can do is compare what a station is doing vs. similar stations and their competition. If something doesn't sound right in our opinion, that's just our opinion. But the fact that we're on these boards means we at least care enough to voice it.

I applaud them for making changes, as well. However, like I said, if they don't fix the playlist, changing what they do in the morning is not going to help them much. Only adding 2 or 3 new songs once a month and playing some of those slow 80s songs on a "Hot AC" is not going to work. "Hot" means new/current/recent. 93.7, and 98.9 may have issues, but they are definitely threats. 93.7 at their younger end, 98.9/97.7 at their older end. Hot AC is a struggle in a market like this, even if it was programmed perfectly. There's a reason it's so scarce around here.

I'll have to hear what they have in the morning before comparing it to Hawk & Tom (who, I agree, are past their prime) and Magic Mornings, but what they've had for the past 6 months hasn't been any better sounding than those stations. They had a morning show back when they had the regular AC format, and the listeners apparently preferred Magic and them "having anybody come in for 2 hours."

Hawk & Tom are way "past their prime" in this market, particularly for those who have been here when they started (wasn't it originally Hawk & Marty for the first couple years...wow, that was a long time ago). But what's sad is that they actually still do seem to appeal to the younger market. My kids (3rd and 7th graders) always force me to listen to them driving them to school and they talk about whatever stupid stuff they do with their friends as well as us.

So, until something better comes along, I can't really nail the coffin on Hawk & Tom.

Will be anxious to hear what MY's show sounds like.

I made a comment about Hawk & Tom being washed up on the CHR board here and somebody said they still brought in good ratings and I even saw a few posts commenting that they did a good job. Maybe it doesn't seem as bad if you're on the outside looking in.

I don't think it's that they're bad talent, but Hawk & Tom are just past their prime and stale, IMO. I think they would sound better on a more adult-oriented format. Yes, it was Hawk & Marty until the late 90s. I know PLENTY of kids and young adults that still like Hawk & Tom. Since they really have no competition, I guess they are going to be somewhat popular. They are way more tolerable and likeable than The Rise Guys down the hall, that's for sure.

Ah, yeah, I think a rock rolling around a box would be more tolerable than the Rise Guys.

While I like music, it would still be good to get a fresher sounding morning show around here.

i am not sure you can categorize radio stations and compare playlists of stations in greenville, columbia, and charleston with other successful station who are listed in the same format nationally. every market does not have the same number of signals or formatic choices so their niches and successes will be different. i realize that hot/new/fresh would imply a lot of new songs but who is the other hot ac in a south carolina market. maybe a hybrid will fit and lure a segment of the available audience. if you transplanted the top 10 stations in any market to another of similar size the ratiings would not be the same. music selection is key but not the entire station in south carolina markets.

For those who just assume that I'm done here: Marv!!!!!!! Marv, Hat!
Whip!, and move that fan out the way. Let me crack this rawhide across the cheeks of the one or of those responsible for this outrage.
Again, I redun-duntly repeat, reverb, and echo: WHO IN THE FLYIN' FUDGECAKE IS ZAC MORGAN? For the love of Ben & Jerry's, Clear Channel...you just fired three of the Best Announcers to ever crack a live mic, John Crenshaw, Joe Trusty, and Rick Larson. Yeah, sure, yes, I blessedly count them as my friends, but aside from that, why would you hire a no-name, that has NO marque value in this market?
Any one of those three, could have, and would have strattled that saddle, rode your Mornin' Mule to the money market, but OH, #?%% NO...you have to go and hire John Doe, dead on arrival, wearing a blank toe tag! Stupid is...as Stupid does, but how %?#! Stupid can one be?? Answer:(The Board Lord won't let me type my answer.)

^ For whatever reason, Hot AC doesn't work in most southern markets, but AC does. The only one I know of anywhere in the Carolinas is WMYB in Myrtle Beach, which is more of a unique market. The most recent one anywhere around here was when Clear Channel tried it in Chattanooga and it flopped. I think there was one in Asheville that eventually went CHR. Charlotte couldn't even support a full-fledged one. Why, I don't know. Some larger markets can't even support it.

I think CC is aware of Hot AC's poor track record around here so they are playing it extremely safe when it comes to new music on MY, by not playing a whole lot of "new" music. However, some of the new stuff if surprising - I was surprised to hear Foster The People, Gym Class Heroes, etc and they were extremely fast with the latest Kelly Clarkson song. At least not all of the new songs are 'safe.' I give them credit as well for at least trying a different idea. Not sure if it'll work, but will be interesting to watch this year.

Scooter Lesley, they can hire someone else with less experience for less money. I highly doubt they're willing to shell out a ton of $$ for MY right now. Those individuals you mention, while talented, are more expensive to have than CC is probably willing to pay them. And, I doubt they would make that big of a difference, ratings wise. Bill Love was there for 24 years? and look what wound up happening to the mainstream AC format. I personally thought Bill was very good talent when with the right person. Just because someone has familiarity doesn't mean ratings, IMO. There is a lot more to success than that.

Even though they still were dragging the 70s songs along with them, I actually think there were less "safe" right after the flip. Things like Florence and the Machine and more aggressive 90s/2000s rock seem to be diminishing and the songs they are adding are fairly mainstream CHR and even rhythmic (ie., songs you can already hear on places like B93.7). I'd rather hear some adult alternative/modern rock that we don't hear. There is less 70s, which is good. Guess I can understand the safe attitude given the track record of Hot AC in the South.

They were relatively fast with Kelly Clarkson, but the song is like #2 on the Billboard charts so it wasn't too much of a stretch. Still, it's good to hear ANY new add on MY.

*** still waits for a decent new rock station ***

OK,...PAYROLL CLERK, CAROLINARADIO,...Share your math with us all:
Both Rick Larson, and Joe Trusty were listed as part-time. So, we don't require any reflection there. However, John Crenshaw was full-time, and had a salary. How much was that?
Now, regarding this in-coming air-miracle, Zac Morgan. How much per year your figure they had to offer...in order to...fish him in from wherever, to get up five days a week at 3:30am?
I thought that poor Marne was gonna get some sleep, and come in at nine or ten, being the listed PD. I can name you ten guys, including myself, and two women that would roll 6-10, and do their own news for 25, +plus medical, and dental. So, how much will this no-name, no marque value, dead on arrival, wearing a blank toe tag, John Doe...pocket for both his relocation, and air shift skills(?)?
Answer: $_________

Dude, you may be willing to do mornings for 25K but anybody with any talent will not. Quit begging. The rest of us are not that desperate. Turn the page and move on.
