New Co-Anchor for Steve Ryan on 3TV

In 3TV's constant struggle to find someone who can tolerate Steve Ryan on Saturday nights, his new co-anchor is Karen Brown, who was a CBS Newspath reporter based here in Phoenix. It wasn't a stellar first newscast, but Karen has recently been a reporter, not an anchor. Hopefully, she will improve...we will see at 9pm.

I watched the 5:00 newscast, mostly to see who were the anchors and who was doing weather. Brown threw to Andi Barness but called her "Barnes."

I missed that one. I thought it was interesting that she kept forgetting to turn on her mic. :D

I actually just tuned in to see how weird Steve Ryan acted this week! ;D

The whole 5pm show was screwed up. They had the normal music and opening and then Steve went right into the raid at Danny's. He did not even say his name or his new co-anchors name. Then the toss to Andi Barnes (who is way over her head trying to do weather. She needs somebody to produce an easy to use weather segment for her.) Later in the show, Tyler was at the Cardinals game and forgot to turn the mike back on and you saw a hand come up from the front to turn it on for him. Finally, (as they were running late) the final seconds of the show was when Steve Ryan introduced Karen.

(I sent an email to 3TV at 5:15pm mentioning that nobody had introduced the new anchor, not even the usual graphic with the anchor name when they were doing the early stories. I think that is the only reason that they did the last minute into.)

I had no idea who she was. I know we are waiting for Jaime Cerreta to join the team and I thought they said she was going to be a weekend evening anchor. (She posted on Facebook last week as she drove into Arizona on I-40, so I thought she would be on the desk by now.) I don't remember seeing any industry "on the move" posts talking about Karen Brown.

I missed the top of the show on Saturday evening, but I assumed that Karen was Jamie Cerreta. Weekend evenings are not Channel 3's strong point and Saturday's 5pm newscast just proved the point. It looked like amateur hour on 3TV. :D

@fenix, what the heck was going on over there???

Jaime Cerreta starts on Monday but I think it will be general reporting rather than anchoring. We'll see if she anchors at all next weekend I guess.

I did some searching and found the stories about Karen Brown which came out around Aug 7/8. In the release, it says that Karen will be a weekend anchor/reporter and the other release states that Jaime Ceretta will be a weekend evening anchor/reporter.

Marie Saavedra should be leaving shortly for WFAA in Dallas. 3TV might keep Karen with Steve on Saturday evening and put Jaime solo on Sunday evening.

(Last night did seem to be a rough start for Karen. I watched some of her interviews and reports done for CBS News and she is talented and qualified to anchor. I think the whole butchering of the opening segment last night got things going the wrong way.)

Marie's last day was today. Jaime will be anchoring Sunday evenings.

Hopefully, this will also provide additional anchors to fill-in when the primary anchors are on vacation. For example, weekend GMAZ is difficult to watch if it is solo-anchored when either Ryan or Tess is away. Hopefully, Karen, Steve, or Jamie can help out.

As for the Saturday evening newscast, it also looked like Karen hadn't been given time to "practice" with Steve. It looked like they just "three" her on the set. In addition, there were just some unfortunate errors in the newscast.

To be fair, for the Saturday 5:00 PM show, they opened with several 'breaking news' stories which probably threw off the entire news department.

That's where the director failed. It should have been: que Opening music; que Breaking News graphic; Steve: "Good Evening Arizona, I'm Steve Ryan; que graphics with anchor names; Karen: "and I'm Karen Brown."; Steve: "We begin with Breaking News...."

Unless they had a failure on the control board, that is the way it should have opened.
