New Country in LA...again

John Ivey was spotted at last night's Brooks and Dunn concert backstage (at Universal). Word also has it that Star is the station of favor but they're waiting till at least the 16th (next trend) to see what if any moves Star makes. One other company is in talks with other KZLA jocks about a possible move as well. The wait and rumors just won't die!

Other than the John Ivey spotting, this is old news for this board. They may not have to wait until the 16th to know if Star is going to shine or not in the summer book.

If Country is as great of an idea as some make it out to be on this board...wouldn't *someone* out there have jumped the gun already?
I mean, before the very station spoken of here even gets the chance to do so?

Also if Ivey were seen at the symphony would the assumption then be that Star is going classical?...... NO. DO you actually think that knowing all of the rumors flying about country, John Ivey would be deliberately backstage at a Brooks and Dunn show talking business?..MAYBE THE GUY JUST LIKES THE BAND (god forbid). Listen if it were going to happen and there actually is another company in talks with the KZLA jocks (which I doubt) Any smart programmer would have flipped by now to create a pre-emptive strike.

That's just the point: there aren't any good programmers. Only beancounters with MBAs, timidly waiting for the next fad format to test well at the Mall of America.

It takes time to research, plan and execute a new format like this. Nobody was thinking of going country until Emmis dumped it.

If you believe AllAccess.com and AllAboutCountry.com, there is/was more than one station considering a flip to country. But when the "rumor" about Clear Channel, the 800 lb. gorilla, started circulation the "other" station put its possible format flip on ice.

As for Clear Channel, it isn't like Emmis. You can't keep secrets. Too many people. And too many inside the organization who hate it. It's like working for the government in Washington D.C....so many leaks that even 'Depends' or 'Pampers" could never handle them.

What will be most ironic is if Clear Channel ends up flipping Star, Mark Mays will have already spilled the beans himself http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,48423.0.html

There was a time when RKO was seen just like Clear Channel is today, but they became the 800 pound Gorilla with 7 AMs and 7 FMs! That's how many stations there were Nationally! It took top talent, great programming and guts on that even playing field before consolidation. Now if a company just has 14 stations in all, they are considered Mom and Pop operators.

Mostb1, Great analogy about DC and CC!

Agree with you on the count...but not on the product. RKO, at least, had reputation of generating stations that people loved listening to. CC does that by grabbing most popular formats ... but not by making the stations "fun" and exciting the way RKO did. I get the impression people wanted to work at RKO ... but these days "settle" to work at CC.

RKO was indeed where everybody wanted to be. They didn't have the leaks like CC does today either. Anybody who worked there knew that "Everything was as private as your underwear". It was a true Brotherhood!

Since 103.1 dumped dance twice for a format with lower ratings, this would be an opportunity for them to pick up a format that would at least double thier ratings, even with thier weak signals.

The areas they cover well are not the ZIPs where KZLA got its cume from.

Are we still predicting the demise of Indie 103.1? What will next year be THREE years?
Many, many radio stations have flipped or drastically readjusted in LA in that time.
