New country station (and it's not in Dothan!)

WPFL 105.1 (licensed to Century, FL, but caters mostly to Atmore, Flomaton, and Century) has dropped its satellite oldies format for satellite country. The station had previously used ABC's Oldies Radio service, and I think it has switched to ABC's Real Country.

Interesting to me is Brewton's WKNU-FM "106.3 Coyote Country", who is listed in Wikipedia as using Real Country. Even though the stations share few [if any] local advertisers, the WKNU owners can't be very enthused that their format is being duplicated so locally. But it's probably the local advertising that matters the most--each side of the county has its own new car dealerships, local restaurants, and other businesses.
 
WKNU used to be Real Country about 2 years ago, back when I was putting up campaign signs for Kim Drake. 4 months ago, I was doing an odd job guarding logging equipment on a mountain in Blount County and was getting some major skip from that little 3kw torch.They were carrying ABC's Today's Best Country, same as nearby WKLD in Oneonta and WINL in Linden carry. WPFL does have a better coverage area than KNU. so If anybody likes real country and live near atmore, they're in luck.

Only if a station up here in Cullman County would carry Real Country... ;D

As you know (but others may not), those are holdover calls from when this station tried to make its way into Pensacola. You're right, they haven't been appropriate for quite a while.
 
What does WPFL stand for? Pensacola, FLomaton; or Pensacola FLorida?

Also is the station's studio's in Century, or in a nearby town. Also, I imagine the signal can be heard in pensacola, but is the signal strong there? I'd look on the other radio site, but my internet is currently at 9.6k per second.

I guess I'll find out in a couple months when it's time to hit the Campaign trail again. ;D

They refer to Pensacola, FLorida: At one time they had their signal nulled south to attempt to serve P-cola. I think the tower was at one time located further south than it is now, too.

No clue as to where the studios are--probably Flomaton if I had to guess. I know WPFL will carry quite well west of Atmore heading toward Mobile on I-65 ; I'm not so sure about due south toward Pensacola.
 
WPFL 105.1 Century/Flomaton

Yes, WPFL had a listenable signal in Pensacola at one time. Their tower was south of Century (in McDavid, I believe) with a 25kw directional throwing it's signal due south over the city. It was nulled toward Mobile and Panama City. They never did much in Pensacola and operated for many years as a local Flomaton, Atmore, Brewton, Cantonment, Jay, and Century station.
Jay Braswell posted on this board that he was involved in the move of WPFL. If I recall correctly, he said that the owners wanted to move it just far enough north to use full C3 power on an omnidirectional antenna. He threw in his two cents and convinced them to raise height and lower power from 25kw with the hope that with the added height the station would still be able to cover Pensacola from a new tower 25 miles north of the old one. I believe the new tower fell the first week they were on the air and had to be rebuilt.
They are not listenable south of I-10 with their new transmitter north of Century. There's just too much interference from the 50kw 105.1 from Panama City. Hopefully Jay Braswell will find this thread and fill in the blanks.
When WPFL covered Pensacola they had a swap shop program. I can't remember if they used a Florida or Alabama phone number. If someone that can pick up WPFL hears the swap shop show, the area code for the phone number should tell you where they hide the studio.
 
Are they crazy? A third dog in what's a two dog race right now? One with heritage ('XBM) and one that has a rep that you will find hard to break into, 'YCT. Plus throw in the Mobile market ('KSJ and Kix) and the area is saturated. Obviously someone didn't do their homework.

I doubt that WPFL is trying to competein Ptown or Mobile's market; they're probally trying to just serve the rural communities in Both Escambia Counties. The big stations like Kicks104 and WXBM cater to the mainstream modern country, while a smaller station, like WPFL, can find a niche position with its listeners. Its format consists of 70's,80's and 90's country, with a recent traditional sounding song from today thrown in.

Personally, I hope this small station does well with its new format. ;)

Dude, you missed a few. That area is not only covered by the two country stations from Pensacola and two more country stations from Mobile but also one from Crestview, one from Brewton and another one from Repton.

Come visit beautiful Escambia County Alabama, we now have SEVEN local country music stations. Take that Dothan!
