Wendi Power named as the new GM for three Cox Radio stations in Tampa
After 15 years of sales in the Windy City, WGN-AM, Chicago (720) Director of Sales Wendi Power moves south to Tampa, taking over as GM of three FMs for Cox. In Chicago, Vocalo.org reports that WGN swiftly promotes Jeff Hill from LSM to Director of Sales, replacing Power, while Matt Munro is promoted to Local Sales Manager, replacing Hill.

Is this good? More live jocks? Jingles? No more boring liners?

The Point has been "new" since December 2001. 94.9 has been "new" since 95YNF bit the dust in August 1993... :'(

Management people with great air names! Wendi Power, Matt Munro

You've got the date right for The Point. December '01. I hear what you're saying, but 94.9 has actually only been "new" since the re-imaging from "Warm" to "Magic". I believe that was sometime around '99 or '00. One of the funniest things I've seen concerning all this is Magic has even taken it a step further with their web site. It used to be simply "949online.com". However, that domain name now points to... can you guess? ...."NEWmagic949.com". Come on Cox!!!! Now that's taking it a bit too far.

As a former radio programmer and marketing professional before going into consulting, I always thought of "New" as being less than a year and more closer to six months. After that length of time "New" just becomes redundant and annoying. Ten years of "New" is overkill!

Are they trying to attract the "new" residents who move into the area on a daily basis?

It is a new station to you if you have been listening to 106.7 Lite FM for the last 26 years.

Using that logic every radio station on the planet would be perpetually new. The reality is any radio station over a certain age is no longer new but rather it becomes heritage, even if you don't like the station. The fact that it has lasted for many years qualifies the station as an established heritage station and is no longer "new". A station cannot be "new" and heritage at the same time which goes to basic logic. Nothing "can be" and "cannot be" at the same time. It either "is" or it "isn't" but not both. Would you call WFLA "New" using your example? Although WFLA along with every Tampa Bay radio medium technically can be argued as "New" to a newcomer, the fact remains the station in question is not really new as it has been established for many years.

Really has nothing to do with the age of a station. "New" is simply one of those "hot" words that produces emotion. Like "free". We pay for many things that are "free", however, the word creates an emotion. Granted, in these cases it may be similar to the billboard that you have driven past hundreds of times and no longer see.

Regardless, can't you just hear that Bill Drake jock intro and the Johnny Mann singers doing the ID...."Ladies and Gentlemen, you're listening to WENDI POWER".......Great name!

Yes, to somebody who hadn't heard an origional song,

Logic takes a back seat to marketing and perception.

WFLA isn't new but it concentrates on new(s), or new news. Although, late at night there is no news or very little of it. The station is just there.
While I agree with your assesment, I would pose a different angle: Could a "heritage" station such as WMMR, should they concentrate only on breaking new rock releases, call themselves "new"?

No, I can't hear that as Drake was sexist and didn't hire female jocks.
