New Daytime Soap Opera at CBS In Development

No this is not an early April Fools joke at all:

If an hour it will likely replace The Talk at 2 ET.

If just a half hour CBS has several options.

Return 12:30 to affiliates and cancel The Talk.
1pm Y&R
2pm B&B
2:30 The Gates

Cut Y&R or The Talk to 30 minutes (The Talk would be more likely)

12:30 Y&R
1:30 B&B
2pm The Gates
2:30 The Talk

12:30 Y&R
1pm B&B
1:30 The Gates
2pm The Talk

Cancel B&B and replace it with The Gates in 2025
12:30 Y&R
1:30 The Gates
2pm The Talk

Of course now they will do something I did not even suggest.

As the show is only in development, everything relating to casting, location, length, etc, is currently being discussed behind the scenes. One thing is for sure: soaps take longer to get off the ground, but with the way things are done in daytime and TV in general these days, it's possible this show could be up and running as early as October. Or it could debut as late as fall 2025. We'll see. Either way, the way it was announced and what I know about the way it was announced, I would doubt it doesn't get a full series pickup. Especially with all parties involved. Proctor & Gamble (P&G) isn't getting back into the soap game, especially with such an acclaimed writer as Michele Val Jean, to produce trash. So, I'm going on a limb and say this gets ordered and replaces Talk with the schedule below:

1230ET Y&R
130ET The Gates
230 ET B&B

Remember while Y&R received a four year renewal while B&B only received a one year renewal.

Yeah, development is far from done. The partnership between CBS and NAACP has yielded no actual series yet. This may be the one to break that streak. It may not. But not renewing Bold & Beautiful (yet) for a comparable time as Y&R could be a hint at where they'd look for it to go. If it comes to fruition and doesn't get reworked as a show elsewhere, like Paramount Plus as one example.

The Talk is an advertiser friendly demo show. No one is going to mistake it for the View in dominance. But it's got better demo numbers than Y&R in key demos. Y&R still cleans up in the old people demos (calm down, I'm old), and I know the whole Julie Chen/Les Moonves thing, but judging the show objectively on its merits, I'd opt to keep the Talk and send B&B packing. IF, big if, this ever sees the light of day.

Hmmm! This is interesting! The last time we had an all-Black soap opera, it was at the bottom of the ratings (NBC's Generations). But this is a different era nowadays, with people of color frequently in the spotlight. This might open the daytime audience to a new fanbase of viewers! Or it could end up as a Paramount+ exclusive.
I can't see CBS canceling Y&R unless something major happens (like if/when Victor passes away in real life).

That’s another possibility. CBS might want to let The Gates get a jump on General Hospital and let it have the Y&R leadin. It could also only be 30 minutes at 1:30 ET.

Another question is will they’ll be enough affiliates to find a time slot to carry it. They have to take in consideration in regards to syndication and local news programming.

Just to point out, two years ago there was the same dutiful trade media coverage of a new spinoff of Daria. Tracey Ellis Ross attached to the project. Fresh off her run in Blackish. A full cast set. And then…crickets.

Well, until this week when it was confirmed it was going nowhere.

Skepticism of what’s put out in trade press serves people well. They’re just doing what they need to, but examine it with a critical eye and keep in mind lots of things get into development and whither away like leaves in winter.

Another possibility

B&B and the Talk are both canned and 12:30-1 returned to affiliates

1-2pm Y&R
2-3pm The Gates

But I just can’t see CBS cancelling both. And outside the Eastern Time Zone The Gates wouldn’t have Y&R as a lead-in on most stations unless they decided to air the news at 11am and Y&R at noon.

I never understood when ABC was going to cancel "All My Kids', why didn't they offer them a 1 hour weekly slot for x weeks to see if the fan base would follow? Yea, I know this was many, many moons ago. Not Moonves :p

Because it was not worth that. Soapy shows in prime time (Grays Anatomy being an obvious ABC example) are different things and daytime viewing patterns are different.

Sometimes things are just dead. It was dead and not worth “offering” some bizarre once a week slot. When you move on, move on.

I think if it makes it to air The Gates will be a 30 minute show. Unless CBS does what ABC did with GH and OLTL and has B&B and The Gatee each 45 minutes. I think a one hour daily show (or 40 minutes before commercials) is a huge viewing commitment for new viewers. All the successful 60 minute daytime soaps started as half hour (or 15 minute) shows and expanded. I also don’t think CBS will change the time slot of the highly rated Y&R unless CBS knows the vast majority of Y&R are not watching live but via DVR, CBS.com, on demand or on Paramount Plus. My bet is The Talk is reduced to 30 minutes or CBS adds another 30 minute game show or daytime talker.
