New Default Channel On Cablevision Boxes Post-WABC Fracas?

Months ago, I set the default channel on my Cablevision box (the channel that appears each time the box is turned on) to Fox Business, Channel 106. Of course, that changed last week with the whole Disney brouhaha. Customers' cable boxes now showed the "alert" channel 1999 as the default channel when the box is turned on.

Of course, that matter, for the most part, is resolved. But this week, I noticed that when I turned my box on, the default channel was not reinstated to Fox Business, but rather, it is now WNYW, Fox 5. It's interesting, because the last time I watched that channel was Sunday, to catch the end of the NASCAR race. I do recall changing the channel before and after that period. So I, for the life of me, can't figure out why and how the Fox station ended up being my new default channel. Are other Cablevision customers getting this? Could this be a sign of things to come, maybe? Are the folks at Fox the next to be meeting with the Dolans at the bargaining table? Hmmm...

By the way, channel 1999? Now, it's a silent test pattern channel.

It sounds as though you are dealing with a very volitile and fluid situation.
Fun to watch - frustrating for a creature of habit.

TV, in its present form, will kill itself.

Politics - and I don't necessarily include Washington - trumps everything.

It is what killed newspapers, not technology.

I have somewhat of an update: Last night, I called Cablevision due to an issue with my DVR box, which required a five-minute diagnostic procedure. So, in an effort not only to kill time, but cover some ground regarding my subscription, I alluded to last weekend's beef with Disney, and wondered how the default channel was changed on all of the boxes (I know why, of course). As I mentioned my previous default channel was not reset, the representative immediately said something along the lines of, "yeah, it's Channel 5 now." I asked why this was the case, and was told only that it was a channel that was chosen for no apparent reason. I had then joked about the possibility that Fox would be the next entity to spar with Cablevision; she laughed it off before assuring me that that is in no danger of happening in the near future.

For what it's worth... hope this information was useful to those who wondered why Channel 5, of all channels in the Cablevision spectrum, were chosen as the new default channel to replace channel 1999 when the cable boxes turn on - it was just a random channel that they had decided on. You'd think it would be News 12 or one of their own channels, but...

I don't get it. Why is there a default channel anyway? Over the years though living with my parents and on my own I've had COMCAST (and its predecessor AT&T and before that TCI), DIRECTV, COX, and DISH NETWORK and when you turn the box on and then off and then on again it's on the last channel you were watching. The only place I recall there being a default channels is at one of the hotels I was staying at. Default channel being the hotel information channel.
