NEW DOTHAN OLDIES STATION

Wow, I found this new oldies station on 100.1 in Dothan and they are playing all of the Elvis Presley hits this weekend. They sound like a major market station and the oldie variety is so far really great. Where in the world did they come from? Anybody know anything about them?

100.1 is a translator for WEEL AM 700 "The Wheel." I believe it has been on the air on 100.1 since October. I don't know much about the station, because I'm 250 miles north in Cullman County, but they're mostly a 50's 60's and 70's style Oldies station.

Sam - You register today and make your first post today about a great station that you've discovered? Where in the world did you come from?

Great oldies variety but they're playing all Elvis?

C'mon man. This is obviously a plant.

Not so much, anymore. Go check out the Atlanta board, they've just gotten one more hip-hop station from a translator. And they could get a revamped version of former alternative rocker '99X' on a translator, also.

Granted, both of these translators are much stronger than 16 watts and cover way more people, but still...better to have someone listen to WEEL on 100.1 than not at all because of AM static.

Especially at night, when WEEL is lost to interference on AM. 16 Watts may not be much, but at least one could adjust their antenna until they pull in the sign.

Isn't WEEL daytime-only? If that's the case, then the 100.1 signal would be a must. 16 watts might not be much, but it's better than no signal at all if the AM is non-existent during the nighttime hours.

[EDIT-unauthorized promotion]

I'm glad we have the translator, because WEEL is daytime only. It might be 16 watts, but check the coverage. We blanket Dothan (where most of the people are.) Our quality is up there with anybody. Check it out. WOOF-FM 99.7 two clicks to the left; Star 100.5 two clicks to the right. We have great programming and a dedicated staff. Oldies Radio -The Wheel is growing and proud to be a part of the Dothan market. Thanks to our listeners and advertisers for helping build the station. We welcome your comments anytime.

BTW, we are trying to get a power increase on the FM and move the AM closer to Dothan (maybe a power increase there, too.)

Didn't realize that this was back up and running until I came across it yesterday while searching the database on Wunderadio (iPhone app). Delighted to find it again. Absolutely a great music mix and top-notch, major market quality presentation. 96k
Shoutcast stream sounds fabulous....better than the 32k AAC stream I remember from last year.

Way to go guys!

Enjoy cyberdad, enjoy because they have made it longer than I expected but don't know how much more they'll make. Dthn is a tough market financially.

I never expected them to come back in the first place....with an upgrade from the original, no less. Let alone last as long as they did the first time around. Don't know anything about it, but my takeaway from all that is that these guys are not just in it for the money.

My concern isn't so much whether Dothan is a tough market financially, but whether the folks there recognize....or even care about/know about....what they've got. Its a treasure. But what they're doing would face long financial odds even if it was on a big signal in a major market. Here's hoping they can find a way to pull it off.

Thanks for the kind words cyberdad. Obviously we are not in it for just the money. Stewy is correct. Dothan IS a tough market especially in the current economy. We're trying to do the best radio we can on a limited budget. As for how long we can "hang in there"; that's in the hands of the local advertisers and God. If Dothan wants this radio station, they will support us. We truly appreciate all of the support we have gotten so far. Ya'll come see us at one of our live broadcast and say hello.

Tom

Thanks, Tom. I actually have been to Dothan a couple of times in the course of 30 years' business travel. But my next trip to Alabama in a couple of months gets me no closer than I-65. I should be in range....barely...of the a.m signal during part of the stretch between Montgomery and Mobile. Of course, I can always get your stream on the iPhone and play it through the stereo.

I'm definitely pulling for "y'all"!

I received it about 7 this evening in Cullman County. "The Wheel" is rollin' in the right direction (in my opinion). Keep up the good work, and maybe I can tune again around sunset, or when I'm heading to FL at about 2 AM every blue moon.

Everyone is invited to listen to a special call-in broadcast tomorrow July 15 at 9am (CT) on either 100.1FM, 700AM or oldies700.com. This program will feature owner Bob Mathers and will be discussing the future of "Oldies Radio - The Wheel!" in Dothan. Please listen and call-in with your questions, if you have any. We want to know if you want us to continue and how you can help if you do.

Tom,

I just attempted to send Bob a note but the email bounced. It said, basically that I felt led to pray for him and everyone at WEEL after reading the notice on the website. You guys are doing radio the right way and I applaud your efforts.

I hope you guys can hold on long enough to survive the storm.

Lots of markets are tough right now and of course Dothan is no exception. When I hear of deals (NOT in Dthn) where you can purchase ads on entire clusters for what works out to .24 per spot (that's 24 cents) then Tom's station is not the only one with big problems.

Tom tried it the right way but IMHO there hasn't been enough time to have the Cheap Channel and Crumulus sales/management/on air systems to completely bury themselves. Those two companies are dying an agonizingly slow death and even when gone the residual of the idiotic practices they taught people will still linger. All in all radio will come back (overall) but the crash is so severe that it could be literally decades in doing so. I wonder if the FCC thinks there is a total eclipse right now with so many signals going and staying dark.......
