NEW EDMONTON CHR TESTING

Edmonton's CJNW 107.1 NEW FM is now testing. The new independant CHR facility is owned by John Yerxa, son of Hal Yerxa who launched CFCW 790 in nearby Camrose in the 50's (which had the distinction of being Canada's only fulltime C&W station at that time).

They're using some interesting stunting.

I like the V rock thing! "All the rock you want and some you don't!" Too funny!

There was some 80's music with some creative voiced announcer to go with that prior to the rock thing.
 
I'm not a fan of the CHR format, but as they're an independent they get my thumbs up. Best of luck in the new venture!

CJNW 107.1 (HOT 107) officially launched today at 5:00PM (MDT) with the expected CHR format taking an immediate direct aim at the competition 91.7 THE BOUNCE (CHBN). Should be interesting up there as CHBN polled in at #2 in the market with a 9.2 share (12+) in last weeks BBM release.

Are they stealing any Bounce (CHBN) radio talent?
 
Interesting, considering that this isn't at all what they were granted a license for.
 
Not many stations these days actually come through with what they originally promise in their applications. Unless a specialty license is involved there is very little the CRTC can do about it.
 
I just find it incredible a station applies for a license, testifies to certain things in front of the CRTC to win against others and then is under no obligation to actually fulfill those terms. Seems unfair to the other applicants.
 
I suppose that is the other side of the coin to the situation here in the U.S. Here, the FCC refuses to get involved at all in format issues and they make no attempt to address listener complaints when stations abruptly change formats that people liked. Hence we have seen many formats like classical and jazz swept aside in the quest for the almighty dollar.

We do have our own version of this, however. We have these guys that come in and make a big plea that they should get a license because they are going to provide a "first local service" to a city that is already served by 20 other stations (but doesn't happen to have a station licensed to it). The next thing you know, the owners are moving that license somewhere else (sometimes halfway across the country) to where they can make more money. In fact we have an entire "move-in" industry down here.

What were they originally licenced for?
Ottawa's Newcap did the same thing. They promised a Planet FM dance format but delivered Hot 89.9, which at the time, was a Rythmic CHR.
