New ESPN frequency in Ft. Myers

Guess the "rock talk" didn't work out that well... And, Stan & Haney need someone to tighten up their show. They ramble on and on and on about stuff best dealt with in a few seconds.

Has anyone heard what Beasley's plans are for 770AM? Will it simulcast the new FM or go another direction? As of this morning the AM770 website is gone.

Both shows are #1 or #2 in their target demo every book which is why they're staying.

They still need to tighten up their show. 770? ESPN Deportes.

The website is up now.

The new 99.3 website is up and running and has been for a couple of days now but the old AM770.com website is no longer on line. It states that it is under construction I just checked on it. That is why I was wondering what the long range plans for 770AM are. Will it simulcast or go to another format.

770espn.com is still up and has a banner that pops up promoting the switch to 99.3 on June 20th. It will be interesting to see what they do with 770. It isn't like 99.3/770 won't be loaded with programming options.

They still hold rights to the Dolphins (96.1), Bucs, Seminoles, Hurricanes, Marlins, and Heat. Even though the Miracle (1350), Gators (1200), Rays (1200), Lightning (1350), NASCAR (102.5), and Notre Dame (98.5) moved to other signals, they could easily keep both programmed separately instead of a strict simulcast. ESPN Radio is providing more play-by-play as is Dial Global. An option for 770 may be CBS Sports Radio and/or NBC Sports Radio.

I guess I had a bad website address. Yes it will be interesting to see what they will do with the AM. I agree they could program it differently at certain times to allow coverage for all the various teams. I guess we will just have to stand by and see what happens.

ESPN Deportes.

OK, I understand Beasley trying to get a Sports station on FM. That's the trend around the country. But why blow up the #7 station that's doing well? WRXK, as a Hot Talk station, has excellent ratings. It's interesting that while the Hot Talk format fell apart after Howard Stern's move to satellite radio, it's still alive and well in Florida.

WHPT Tampa #10
WTKS Orlando #9
WZZR West Palm Beach #8
WRXK Fort Myers #7

So now they're getting rid of the syndicated Hot Talk shows on WRXK, Artie Lange, Lex & Terry, etc. And they're being replaced with Hard-Edged Rock. But WRXK as a Hot Talk station had better ratings than WJBX. So why is WJBX's music replacing the Hot Talk format on 96.1 (except for Bubba and Stan & Harvey)?

Note that the new slogan is "Southwest Florida's Rock Station." But the wallpaper on some of the pages on the website still has the old slogan "Talk That Rocks."

Also it makes no sense to put ESPN Deportes on 770. When will station owners realize, ESPN Deportes is NOT a generic sports format in Spanish. It is VERY SPECIFICALLY aimed at Mexican-Americans. And that's not really the Spanish-speaking population of SW Florida. Caribbean Hispanics who mostly make up the area's Spanish-speaking population couldn't care less about the coverage of Mexican soccer, which is the main thrust of the format. But you know how it must have gone. Beasley sees the Hispanic population rising and says, we'll put a Spanish sports format on 770, never realizing most of the potential audience doesn't care about Mexican and Latin American soccer.

Note how badly Deportes does in Miami and New York, markets where most of the Latino population doesn't come from Mexico. Of the two local FM stations broadcasting in Spanish, 92.1 WAFZ plays Caribbean Tropical music and 97.7 WTLQ plays international Spanish Hits. No station is playing Regional Mexican music because the Mexican population is so small.

As mentioned above, they should have used 770 for CBS, NBC or Fox Sports.

WAFZ? Caribbean Tropical music? They transmit out of Immokalee.

Incredibly stupid move on 93.7's part.

Very few markets can support more than 1 active rock station (many cannot even support 1 station, let alone 2).

K-Rock has the big name air talent in both drive time dayparts. K-Rock is a station on the presets of many male radio listeners in SW Florida. These guys will be going after largely the same ad dollars as 96.1 & 99.3 (which can be effectively packaged as a combo). Granted, 93.7 has WARO as a sister station. Still, if just one-third of the former 99.3 listeners end up at 96.1 instead of 93.7, I don't see how this station can be sold effectively.

Not sure what they think they can accomplish with this move.

While on the surface this move may have the appearance of being less than highest and best use of an FM signal in Southwest Florida, I would not be so quick to conclude this move as "incredibly stupid" and imply the format will fail.

Oftetimes the idea behind a format change such as this one with 93.7 is to erode away ad dollars and listeners from the competition and not necessarily to have two stations in the same format long-term. If WTLT succeeds with this strategy in taking only a small fraction of WRXK's market share, WTLT will do fine. Keep in mind that WTLT has a very good 43kw class C2 signal that covers the MSA with a decent signal.

In Jacksonville, Cox Radio is outperforming Clear Channel's 100,000 watt WJBT with a 200 watt translator in the same format. So, it is being done where the underdog takes on the heritage competitor and actually beats the competition.

Alternative (proper) might have been a slightly better move for WTLT, as the only real competition would be the confusing Beasley 4 translator combo, and it certainly would have siphoned listeners of the old WJBX and gained new ones, given the resurgence of the genre of late. Wouldn't be surprised if they lean more in that direction once they fully launch (especially if "The Link" somehow gains traction).

At least it would be different enough from 96.1 to carve a niche.

Refresh my memory...wasn't there another (short lived) 96KRock competitor on WTLT's old frequency (93.5) back in the mid-late nineties (Rock 93 or something)? Would have been post-Storm 106.3, and during 99X's earlier "New Rock" days. Or was that at 94.5 (pre-Arrow)?

Now the "X" is on 93.7. I did not see that coming.

When did this happen?

HadYourPhil said:
As of noon today "93X". Active rock.

Nevermind...I just got my question answered.

I bet all those offices which had 93.7 FM on their radio dial were taken aback by the change. ;D
