Wheeler Approved To Steer The FCC

The short run as FCC chair has come to an end for Commissioner Mignon Clyburn. Last night, as expected, the Senate unanimously confirmed Tom Wheeler as the next chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. Wheeler was the president of the cable industry lobby 30 years ago and later led the lobbying group for the cellphone carriers. Recently he's has worked at venture capital firm Core Capital, investing in technology start-ups. Wheeler has been a supporter of President Obama since 2007. Wheeler replaces Julius Genachowski who stepped down in March after just under four years running the organization.

Chairman Wheeler staffs up

New FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler hit the ground running by announcing key staff members that he says will also hit the ground running. The appointments are for his own staff in three other areas. The Media Bureau is not one of them.

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler issues his opening statement

Wheeler was short on specifics in his initial remarks after assuming his new job. He noted the challenge of staying on top of a communications universe where rapid change is the rule of the day; and said the FCC’s challenge “…is to secure the future through the actions of the present.”

Today, new FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler addressed the FCC staff where he thanked Commissioner Clyburn for her leadership Acting Chair and introduced his new team. He also discussed his vision for the agency, which includes: the promotion of economic growth, his unabashed support of competition, and the importance of security and public safety.
