New Flagship for Notre Dame

Fighting Irish search for a new flagship.

After a decade of working together, Artistic Media Partners and Notre Dame University have mutually agreed to go their separate ways. Artistic Media president Arthur Angotti says multi-sport play-by-play created “too many conflicts” on its five South Bend, IN stations, especially after several recent format changes.

Wonder if they will drop IU Football, too.

This is probably the best move for ND. Look for heritage station WSBT to be in the mix. What will that do for IU hoops?

"too many conflicts". Hmmm. What could that possibly mean?? I would have thought that carrying ND football would have been a cash cow for AMP over the years.

Not like ND asked them to air the rosary before games...

From what I can gather, University is looking for a strategic partner. Angotti (Dad) practices a "Japanese" style of negotiation...says one thing one day, says another thing another say.

Basically, ND had enough.

Kinda funny huh! Do I smell a mass sale soon? The reason you start to dump your properties is due to clearing the decks for a new buyer.

kentuckymedia ponders..."Do I smell a mass sale soon?"

Just like the interior fragrance of a brand new car...I love that special aroma of a mass sale!!

Art gives his old gas hogs to the stations as their new vehicles. He buys a new one every year or so.

AMP and ND had a deal, then Art came to town, met with ND and screwed the whole thing up. So ND decided to settle with AMP to get out of any obligations with them. That's right, ND would rather pay money to make AMP go away then work with them anymore. Nice going Art! Did you tell your aging board of directors it was Jack Swart's fault. Throw him under the bus and save yourself from embarrassment. You told Jack to "get the contract done". He did and when you didn't like the terms, your ego thought you could do a better job. Well, you didn't. Don't play it off like it's a "conflict" to your programming. Are the salespeople, or rather, salesperson still pushing ND packages? Newsflash: You don't have the games anymore.

—So Artie who gets the hotline firing call for losing the Notre Dame sports contract?

How in charisma’s sake could this have happened? ...Especially given Notre Dame’s heritage of formerly-owning this BIG signal? I guess AMP thinks their 12-24 oriented “excuse” for “pop muzak” is more worthy than a three-hour-on-Saturday-afternoon-per-week Fighting Irish game for a few precious months during the Fall. If they can’t make money off airing the ND football schedule, they exhibit little-ability to market radio period!

I knew some folks that made PLENTY of $$$ selling spots on emasulated 1490 WNDU AM which covered ND sports back in the day. SHAME on you, Art :'(

Mr. HippoR is correct on all counts. Even down to the detail on 1490. What a peanut-whistle signal!!

Yep, if you can't make money peddling golden dome sports you most certainly have "sell-ability" issues.

There was a deal on the table nearly 1 1/2 years ago for ND to re-up with U93 for a series of multi year contracts extensions well before Jack Swart was even gracing the halls of the AMP's northern Taj Mahal. ND was on board and waiting for Art to be chauffered up for a signature. Going to the Far East adage Art learned in the wartime jungles of Vietnam leave it sit on the docks and then when it spoils throw it away to see if I can get a better deal. OOPS no dice Jack go save it while I am off on vacation.... wait this is crap ND should pay us. Why didn't President Artie fix it? I guess when Dad is out of town and not pulling the puppet strings Artie may feel a little exposed.
ND does not make changes lightly nor will it tolerate being contested by small men who think they are important. Let's see AMP net value may be 3 million (rough calculation based on last buyback offer) ND 15 BILLION in the general scholarship fund alone and a global household name and presence. After all they are ND and like to remind people of that fact. Not withstanding Shurtz donates money to ND and they have domers on thier staff. Why not do business with people that are donors and part of the family? Oh that's right Art if part of the Sicillian family or at least likes to have you think he is connected. God spoke and Art lost.

Haven't seen anything from ND. Perhaps they are working with the new station(s). As for AMP, I wouldredict that they will go after IU BB if WSBT gets the nod. Wonder if they will continue to air games on 1620? Interesting thougths on the mass sale. IU would be a tough sale.

Like Art - I may change my mind, though.

Thank you NDMA90 for your thoughts. Hmmm...games on 1620. I don't know. That might be "too many conflicts."

Wait a minute...this just in to the newsroom. 1620 stunting?? Or for real?? No more love songs. Call is now WPNT and out of the speaker we hear CNN Headline News. Are they taking the feed right off of the tv set in the lobby?? But wait...there's still more. Radio-Locator says that WPNT is formatted as oldies "Pickle Oldies Radio" and the web address on R-L directs you to the network that supplies the oldies format for (nearby) Cassopolis, MI WGTO 910 "Good Time Oldies".

Whole Lotta Crazy Misinformation / Stunting Goin' On.

We now return you to the regularly scheduled thread.

GOD—that is the worst AM signal I have ever tuned... I always encouraged "The Brothers In The Cloth" to improve it. I lobbied, bought, and set up the FIRST AM-Opimod fed into that limp Collins TX in 1979 on that station... I won the “competition” among the five that adjusted the Orban – but it made little difference. NOTHING we did could make a difference on that facility. That is a HORRIBLE patch of land to plant an AM tower! ND knew it – in fact they MOVED it from a site on the banks of the ST Joe River when they acquired then-WHOT, to a piece of property THEY OWNED. Now, 1490-South Bend is one of the WORST “coverage AMs” in the country... They [ND] knew it too...

AMP inherited that geographical disaster – THEN applied to the FCC to move 1620 to the SAME DEFECTIVE SITE that 1490 sat upon... WHERE are the “engineers”? 1620 has THE WORST AM X-band signal in America [compare it with 1660 in Kalamazoo—day and night in an area of similar or lower ground conductivity]. AMP has filed an applications to "improve it"—but has taken NO ACTION! Instead they choose to play “Love Songs” to less than a half-share of the South Bend Market.

This market has...Oh, you fill-in the blanks... I need to grab an adult bev :D

Final thought ... when ND announced the FB deal with ISP. WHY? didn't they make BB part of the package? It woudl ahve given ND a national footprint.

Like Art - I may change my mind and post again.

The engineers had no say in the 1620 potential move which probably never did happen, all decisions involving more than $5 are approved by Indy therefore the idea has to be originated in indy even if it is opposite the recomendation of the engineer. i'll bet it was an Indy decison I am sure some type of scheme cooked up in Art's fertile brain to try and save more $ and signal strength be damned. On 1620 you don't have to have hearing to know that if your signal is broadcast out of a flagpole or tv antenna instead of a tuned radio tower that something will not be right. Russia, Norway and Sweden are not in the metro but if they were Love Songs might have a 16 share

ND is in the Big East for men's and women's basketball I am guessing they can't have side deals or no desireability for Big East Games playing on the west coast.

$5, oh you have to be kidding me. Its much like anything that costs more than 2 pennies and piece of molded bread. Indy has to approve everything from the pens for the lobby to the new music you add on an oldies station.

I remember coming into Bloomington with my colleague, and wow, it was sad!

I have worked with quite a few radio companies, and I honestly feel that AMP is one of the most disasterous. Sad thing is the investors are so blinded by the frilly conference calls, they dont know whats going on.

AMP losing ND has to be the largest mistake of the year. Wait til they lose Purdue

I don't post often here. But, I produced the Notre Dame broadcasts for two years when I was APD at U93.

Number one: I saw someone on this board talk about ND's "three hour football game". "Why would U93 just play music instead of playing the three hour football game?" Notre Dame, at least the way we did it, was a seven or eight hour process. I think it was an hour and a half pre and post game and a 20 or so minute Westwood One national pregame... plus the three-plus hour game!! Plus, an unlistenable mid-week coach's show. Plus, the other crap we had to put on the sister stations to keep the football. So, that's invalid.

Number two: The competitive landscape in South Bend for U93 is steeper than it once was. It ain't the powerhouse it once was. Power 95 has taken a nice chunk (as has others) out of U's market share. The proposition of leaving the format for eight hours, 12 or so weeks in a row, is daunting. I remember picking apart the numbers (demos and genders) and showing everyone that is was not a draw for U93 listeners. They'd rather we play the Beyonce records.

Number three: Although sales wasn't my department... I know they were not maximizing on sales opportunities with Notre Dame. Quite frankly, if Notre Dame made us more money... it was only slightly more... and didn't warrant the manpower, time and energy it took to leave the format for eight hours. I remember an awful lot of empty avails.

Number four: ND's strongest draw was the promotional one. WE'VE GOT THE GAME, right? Well, I recall ND was awful to us and very hard to work with. Anything we wanted... they made us stand in line with the rest of the stations. There was no 'added value' to being their hometown station. We had one pair of tickets a week for giveaways... that we got involving a buy from Burger King. They weren't even Notre Dame's tickets!! Thus, we could have accomplished that promotional "edge" without the game, theoretically.

I currently work in Dallas at the former flagship for the Cowboys radio network. Before we gave up the rights, it was the same situation. Out of demo... sales not making the money back to pay for the rights... we had to bail. The on-air radio rights, unless they fit in the demo, are really useless. Notre Dame has it's own TV contract. Why radio? You KNOW you'll find them on NBC/ESPN for the big games.

But, I'm sure the Angottis screwed up and lost the games. That's a 'par-for-the-course' move for them. They'll have to come up with other ways to watch the games.

Go Irish.

Bernie
