New FM in Evergreen WPPG 101.1

For those who keep up with such.... WPGG-101.1 in Evergreen is back on the air. It is now WPPG aka The Power Pig and is owned by Pete Wolff (former owner of 93.3 from several years back). The station has all new equipment (and in a different, remodeled building downtown Evergreen) including NexGen, and all digital program chain including Moseley Uncompressed STL, Orban 8500 processor and Harris Digit exciter. We didn't bring ANYTHING over from the old station except one Starguide receiver that belongs to ABC. I built the new studios and redid the transmitter site as a side job. They run Dial-Global "Mainstream Country" via satellite except for a weekday morning show from 6-9am....studios are nice....new board, dual monitors on the NexGen, separate Cool Edit computer with pro sound card, etc. No equipment at the studio is used or old...it is all new.

Pete is looking for 1 or possibly 2 people...if you are looking to be a big fish in a little pond or tired of the big city, you might want to give Pete Wolff a call at 251-578-1992 (that is the number for his auto dealership...but this is the best way to find him)...Pete is the only person you need to talk to regarding the job(s).

Charlie

Your title is a little misleading...other than the new studios and the slightly different calls, this station is the same facility licensed to Repton. (Or isn't it? I thought Great South ran this station from the old WPGG facilities after Cumulus moved 93.3 to Shalimar.)

On a semi-related note/rant: Pete Wolff runs the biggest car outlet in Evergreen (and Conecuh County, for that matter). Now, he owns the local radio station [again]. Oh, and he's running for mayor of Evergreen, too.

Talk about a pursuit of money and power...nice if you can swing it, I guess. I wouldn't be comfortable with [potential] Mayor Wolff owning the local radio station, though.

Don't know Mr. Wolfe. If cceng posts it, worked for him (cc's picky), expresses the big fish in small pond, that would be all the endorsement of credibility I would need (unless cc says otherwise).

Long live the Broadcast Engineers.

Oh yes, I am groveling and glad to do so on a public forum.

Another "radio information" site has this one listed as being AAA. Is this correct?

According to wikipedia, the "Power Pig" at 101.1 is country, even though the article is showing the the station's previous calls of WTID.

I hope it sounds better than the station did years ago. My wife's folks and sister used to live in Brewton several years ago when the station was known as "Fun 101". My wife and I would visit on weekends sometimes, and one time I recall we were there, staying with my sister-in-law and her husband. We had all retired for the night, and my wife's niece and nephew had left their radio on, the sound was barely audible. I remember the station was playing this rather strange mix of music, and thinking..."WHAT is that?". A few minutes later, the station ID came over and I was able to hear the calls...WFNU "Fun 101". I thought...no wonder...lol

The "other radio information" site you mentioned...does it begin with "Radio" and end with "locator"? :D

Don't ya know...never, never trust radio-locator. :)
They've had Birmingham's WAGG listed for quite a while now as both WAGG and WEZN. Seems like it would only have one record for the station, but somehow wound up with two instead. ???

Do you know of a better one out there? 'Cause I, too, have noticed that their information is not very accurate.

Nope, not off hand. I used to use the one on 100000watts.com for that type of information. They used to have a directory you could access online, but when M Street/Inside Radio got a hold of 100000watts.com, they wouldn't let you access it for free anymore and the directory information was by "subscription only". I didn't want to pay for it, and I don't buy anything from M Street, Inside Radio whatever they call it now, anyway. I subscribed to them for about 14 years, and I had a serious billing dispute with them (materials I previously paid for and for which they never fulfilled their obligation), so I vowed never to buy anything from those folks again.

Pete did not purchase the AM.....I honestly don't know the status of the AM...when I drive by the AM studio site at night headed back to Panama Citiy, the lights are on in the studio....yes, it is licensed to Repton.....covers Evergreen nicely along with Monroeville, and Brewton.....101.1 in Elba limits the coverage towards Andalusia.....both have about equal signals in Andalusia, therefore, neither can claim Andalusia because it sounds like a cat fight on 101.1 when you are driving through there. Oh, one more thing, we even put RDS on the signal the other day....Pete wanted that so he could see it in his truck.

Ahhh... that explains why he went with the WPPG calls instead of the old WPGG calls. Could there be some bad blood between Pete and the current owners of WPGG AM?

There are so many country music stations covering the greater Brewton area now, how does a good ol' boy choose what to listen to? Are any of the stations in that area carrying the same satellite feeds?

no bad blood that I know of....but Pete didn't want the AM....everyone is using a different sat feed....WKNU in Brewton uses ABC...WPPG uses Dial Global....the oldies station on 99.3 in Monroeville is ABC (that is the one I listen to when I am up there since I don't care for country)....but their audio has no high end AT ALL ....almost sounds like AM

Must be a recent change, as they previously used just ABC News and Jones Radio's oldies service.
I know WMFC 1360 uses ABC's "Timeless" service.

Had to rent a Chevy Malibu for a few days...each time I scanned past 101.1, it said "Power Pig".

This is what the RDS RT says (I should know, I programmed it into the box)...." WPPG Evergreen The Power Pig 575-XXXX" (I can't remember the telephone number that I put in so therefore XXXX)

Will be back up there Tuesday afternoon to finish all the little things on a punch list, then I will be done with it. (and I can get my final $$$$$ ;) )

Someone's been playing with it lately, Charlie. Now the RDS message reads "Vote Wolff Mayor Box 1035" or something to that effect.

Charlie --- did Pete sell his original Evergreen station to Ron Hale or did that get all twisted? I seem to remember some lively talk on
that, but can't recall hearing the outcome on much of it.
