New FM News Website

Reminds me of KTRH website but better looking

Clear Channel will lease Bob Pittman's plane for $3 Million now that's new's with all their layoff's! This station is sounding very good, Houston has needed this for a long time. They do need to learn the board dead air while playing interviews is not a good thing. The clean sound of the station is easy to listen to.

Listened to them online, at midday. Twice noticed that Dr. Joe Sobel's forecast was not punched through online after traffic (I heard "background" studio sounds, like board punches, etc) then Scott Braddock said "Thanks Dr. Joe" and it rolls to commercials.

The first time I heard it, I thought perhaps a tech glitch kept the forecast from airing at all. The second time got me wondering if this is a routing problem or are they prohibited from airing the Accuweather feed online?

Everything else sounds great, so far.

Just now 11:40AM no weather again. What's up with that? What's so special about Dr. Joe Sobel? Or Accuweather?

I hear the weather on the air. Sometimes the levels are a little low...

There have been some comments concerning 'dead air.' I do not care how long you have been in the business, you are going to make mistakes when you are in a new radio station or a new gig for that matter. A good board operator knows that and will do his/her best to keep the mistakes to a minimum, before conquering the board. Keep in mind that every station has a little bit different set-up with different equipment. Once a board operator gets control over it, when he/she makes a mistake, he/she will chastise themselves; they don't need our help doing it.

I am not going to be critical of 'dead air' situations. They will get a handle on it. For something that just started doing it today, I'd say they're doing a real good job. Glitches are going to happen; those will be overcome.

Everyone always has something to say. It's the first day people. It's not going to be perfect.. and they are doing a good job.

These days, I believe listeners are not as discriminating as they used to be about quality quirks like a second or two of dead air, especially on a live news or talk venue. In fact, if any format can earn a free pass for this indiscretion, News/Talk could. I think some of us are just splitting hairs.

Interestingly, although it's been a while since my last aircheck, for years, New York City's "All News, All the time" WINS punctuated their live segments (save for commercials) with a constant background audio-track of non stop teletype. Their rival at the time, WCBS AM, never did this, so when WCBS would go "dead", even for 2-seconds, the silence was deafening.

WINS' gimmick might even have been a loop, I don't know, but it sure covered a multitude of dead-air sins. Board techs could use this time for routing, while listeners never lost a beat. Hearing that teletype running assured them that more news was on the way.

The fake teletype on WINS continues to this day. The moment you open the mic, the effect automatically fades in.

The same teletype effect has also been employed by KYW/Philadelphia, another legacy Westinghouse all-newser, for the same amount of time. IIRC, KFWB/LA also did the same thing when they were all-news.
