new format at 93.5 WCTB

anyone notice that 93.5 WCTB augusta area has a revamped 80s/90s hard rock format ? They are calling themselves 93.5 the edge. In place of the 70s based classic rock format that been on that station for the last few years. Any idea how long they've been on the air with this format ? I don't drive north that often but noticed it tonight when i was scanning around the dial. I think Chris Rush from TOS was the voice on the sweepers and some of the ads / promo's.

I think a few weeks. Chris Rush is definitely the voice on the sweepers and is on in the afternoons. I don't know if they're looking to compete with WTOS as far as active/hard rock is concerned. But their format is somewhat similar, without the emphasis on newer rock (Nickelback et al).

I'm surprised no one mentioned the format change it on this board sooner. TOS could use a wake up, they sound terrible. Nothing live, very stale music mix, even the voice tracking sucks. Every break is you just heard, coming up these 3 artists and don't forget to listen to kennedy on wednesday nights for local music or don't forget to listen to the 420 bar crawl. That is when there is even a break. But I guess that goes alone with all of the other blueberry stations, I didn't think radio could be worse then clear channel but Blueberry as shown it can be.

TOS is stale, all right. Does the Edge have the signal to compete with them, though?

I noticed that WCTB doesn't have a website. WABK the top station in that market also doesn't have a website.Seems like it would be important for these two stations to have a website.

I believe WVOM and WTOS are the only blueberry stations that have websites, they own like 18 or something. However, I don't think either of those sites is updated very well. WCTB signal isn't the regional one that TOS is but i think it covers the augusta market with a strong signal. If they are focused there they should do ok. WCTB has had a lot of formats over the years, i can think of at least 5 different ones, so it may take a while for people to find it, especially if there is no marketing behind it.

it's not really a new format, they've been classic rock as "The River" for about 4 or 5 years now. I think it has a listener base. Their facebook page already has 100 fans or so so I'd say there's some marketing and sales behind it.

100 fans isn't very many for a Facebook page.

One thing that will help their publicity this summer is that they're picking up the Skowhegan Battle of the Bands, which WTOS dropped a couple of years back. That should give them some good visibility at a pretty well attended event in the area.

I think there is a big difference between the standard run of the mill classic rock format they were doing as the river and the 90s based format they have now. I don't know of very many classic rock stations that play rage against the machine, tool, Alice in chains etc. yeah the battle of the bands was a good score for them.

I really don't know why WTOS gave it up...it was their big annual event. They don't have any events now outside of the school thing they do.

I am wondering what WTOS's plans are now that their broadcast facility in Augusta is "on the market"?

I'm pretty sure I heard one of the WABK guys mention that they're in a new Augusta center by the Augusta Civic Center. I wasn't paying close attention, but he said something about the Shrine Circus being about "300 feet away" from their new offices, so they must be over there somewhere.

That assumes that WABK and WTOS are still in the same offices/studios. They were before.

I think that the augusta building those stations used to be located in was leased not owned. I know when CC owned that cluster there was a TON of empty space in that building. It seems that Blueberry is running pretty everything out of bangor these days so I would assume in a way to cut costs they moved to a cheaper and smaller space. TOS has one live show, and the stuff kennedy does, i don't listen to ABK a lot but i'd be surprised if they were any different.

and kennedy's stuff might be tracked, both their afternoon and night jocks are tracked from bangor...one does afternoons on Kiss 94.5 and the other is Paul Dupuis' sidekick on the Bear

and as for websites, WVOM, 'TOS, Kiss and The Bear have websites, I think everyone else has domains that aren't being used

The kiss 94.5 and the bear must be fairly new, last i looked neither station had one. I'm pretty sure Kennedy when he is on is live. Everything else on TOS or any other blueberry station for that matter is anyone's guess. It's really a shame the product that blueberry puts on the air across all of there stations. you think a locally owned company would put more resources into staffing there stations. I'm not saying they need to be live 24/7 or anything like that, but to have the few jocks that blueberry has voice track on every station they own really is radio done cheap and bad.

and as for websites said:
According to Radio Locator WABK is the third most visited website via Radio Locator.
Top 3 Most Visited Web Sites of Maine Stations (via Radio-Locator):
1. WBLM 102.9 FM Portland, ME Classic Rock Listen!
2. WCYY 94.3 FM Biddeford, ME Alternative Listen!
3. WABK 104.3 FM Gardiner, ME Classic Hits
They haven't had a website a year or two.

It is very timely that I discovered this website To introduce my self I am Tim Smith AKA Timtron. I have been associated with the group of radio stations in Skowhegan for many years of which WCTB is one of them. The station signed on the air in 1993 and has had a number of formats through the years. For the last five years it has been one the the Wall mart type formats. WAITT radio's classic rock package.Rated dull and boring after a while. Just another cardboard front classic rock station. We all realized that it is time for a refreshing change. Chris Rush came on board recently. He was PD at WTOS for many years until Blueberry acquired the group of 17 stations from Cheap Channel operating from the radio death star in Augusta. He was let go in the usual bloodletting that takes place during corporate take over from one entity to another. This is only the beginning. The Edge will grow and expand .More and We have plans for a move of the transmitter site to improve coverage as well as upgrading the audio processing. The group of stations includes Mix 107.9 a "Hot AC" format station that is doing very well. Our AM ,WSKW had been ESPN radio for many years. It never made any money, I also questioned the number of listeners it had. We finally dumped ESPN and put our own home grown oldies format on the transmitter . Legacy 1160 which I am part of. It does need a lot of work but it is only the beginning. It is time to re define the so called "Oldies "format. Locally run radio is alive and well here in Central Maine. The Timtron
