*NEW FORMAT: CLASSIC HIP HOP and R&B

*NEW FORMAT: CLASSIC HIP HOP and R&B plays your favorite Hip Hop and R&B hits from back in the day. With songs from the late 80s through the new millennium, the core of our playlist is from the 90s. It’s the music that puts your station between Urban and Urban AC formats – giving today’s more mature Generation X listeners a new choice. Classic Hip Hop and R&B represents evolution and is Urban radio’s newest tool in showcasing the lifestyle of this coveted audience.

They should, but KRNB is doing a better job at it than KSOC.

Good to see that there is indeed some life at the former ABC Radio Networks, especially since Sh!tadel managed to dump out of or dilute every remaining format that ABC had (in the name of bankruptcy and Fagreed's bean-counting...laying off nearly every decent talent they had in the process.) And nice to see that Mike Love has spread out his interests beyond The Beach Boys. ;D

However, I think this format idea is both TOO narrowcasted and TOO broad, if that's possible. Rap in the mid and late 90s, to me at least, is not compatible with what was going on in the late 80s and early 90s. Fun stuff like Sir Mix-A-Lot and MC Hammer and Boyz II Men and even overly-socially-conscious Arrested Development being intertangled with the 'hate rap'/East Coast vs West Coast of the late 90s? Let alone Eminem and others who sponged off the genre but never "lived" it?

Then again, if it were to zone in on basically 1988-94, would a 100.3 Jamz redux be broad enough to get an audience? (Beyond the 3 or 4 here on the board...including me.)

Salem, where ya at? I am very interested in your opinion on this.

94.5 needs to pick it up, because right now, KRNB is clearly the better station, and the numbers even prove that.

I think could be a very viable format for black adults 34-45. This is what black adult radio should be about. This is what the Urban AC format should be. I hope Citadel is able to make it work.

I'm picturing a version of Backspin on Sirius/XM... is that what we're talking about here? If so, I'm IN!!

This format is like Backspin and The Groove mixed together. Its more New Jack Swing as well.

I think 107.5 shuold try the format. it is better than what they are doing right now. They also have a better signal than 94.5 and 105.7.

If they could get the "KNOK" calls back, then it would be a homecoming for black radio in this market. Well we would need Earl Graves to buy the station again.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that what Movin' 107.5 was SUPPOSED to be?

Not really. Most of the classic hip hop and New Jack did not appeal to the younger demos. Most of today's kids don't know that Ice-T, Ice Cube or Queen Latifiah were actual rappers.

I see they've hired Barbie Doll Peaches, (formerly of K104), and Steve Nice,(mixer for K104). I wonder if Steve is still working for K104?
