If true, absolutely no surprise. La Mera Mera's numbers are awful, and it is a stand-alone format totally out of sync with Radio One's other two Houston properties and its overall African American core. The ratings results over the past 21 months have not justified the $72.5 million paid for the stick.

However, 92.1 was still La Mera Mera at a check just now. Perhaps we may finally see Urban Gospel here? ???

I imagine a few former KRTS fans are having a good chuckle over this...!!! ;D

Update: The La Mera Mera website has disappeared, and is now showing "Under Construction." http://www.921lameramera.com/

Maybe a R&B station like the old 97.5 use to be I could see that

Listened to 92.1 for a while...La Mera Mera is still there as of 3:15pm, but running jockless, and I'm not hearing any commercials, either.

anyone making an aircheck for this station? I can't get it in SA becasue of Radio New Branfules 92.1, plus no online stream.

did anything happen yet ???

give us an update

As of 0200 Sunday it is still KROI La Mera Mera and Regional Mexican. Likely will change formats at midnight Sunday night/Monday morning as David stated. David is usually right on target. I did hear commercial spots during the evening, but nothing since midnight, but this may be normal for a low rated station like KROI. Lots of La Mera Mera ID's though after every song.

No telling what the format change will be, although I would guess that Radio One is finally going to go with Gospel as it would fit in with KMJQ and KBXX by not taking any listeners from either station. Gospel should do fairly well in the ratings, certainly better than the one rating that KROI has been getting the last few books.

Still La Mera Mera as of 9am Sunday.

I'll stick with my longtime Urban Gospel prediction. Radio One has been sharpening the focus on its African American core, so the new format should fit better with KMJQ and KBXX, if they are indeed keeping the station for the long run.

This will probably end any speculation for now about Cumulus, Cox, CBS, or Liberman winding up with 92.1.

The new format will be the fifth for 92.1 since sign-on, not including the two week "90's and More" stunt when RO took over. I rather doubt there will be a call letter change.

Just tuned into the station... when I turned it on a song was playing... I think it was "Bi-Lamay"... can't speak/type spanish... then after the song ended, dead air is all you hear... hopefully more to come. Oh yea, my tape recorder is rolling!!

If the rumor is true about Gospel radio, I believe it will be a successful station in Houston, plus good competition to KSBJ and KWWJ.

I also happened to be listening when the apparent last song played on La Mera Mera. Song ended around 4:30pm, then dead air. No announcements, no sign-off. Still dead air as of 4:50pm.

I think it is going to be gospel. I was at church today and I saw a couple of people with promotional church fans that said "Praise 92.1 fm Houston's praise station".
Finally they decided to go with market research. Hopefully it won't take away to much from Majic 102. From what I hear, that is their top billing station. Any thoughts on how it will effect the bottom line for Majic?

Nice catch!!! Just what so many of us had speculated on. It just makes too much sense.
Finally they decided to go with market research.
Finally they decided to do what they should have done when they first bought the station in September 2004.
Hopefully it won't take away to much from Majic 102.
Should bring more total listeners to the Radio One table. Majic may lose a little, but will probably more than be made up for by the addition of the Gospel format. And many spots for Majic, The Box, and Praise can be sold in combination, something much harder to do with the former stand-alone format on 92.1.

KROI still with dead air as of 5:05pm.

I agree 100%. I heard from a reliable source that back when the station was bought, they did market research and found out that the market craved for an fm gospel station. But they figured that it would fragment their audience to much so they figured they would try regional mexican.
As many of us thought, it did not work. It was doomed from the start. So I guess they finally came to their senses and put the wounded horse to sleep.
I think if they sell the station as a christian lifestyle as opposed to just music they might be able to attract some big name advertisers. What I mean by lifestyle is sell it as an audience that spent over a billion dollars and movies, music, clothing, concerts and the like. The christian industry is big business. If they sell the station accordingly they should bill well. Most religious stations do not think like that, however. So I guess we will see.

At 6:03pm I heard 92.1 ID as La Mera Mera. Actually an illegal ID that went "KROI, 92.1 La Mera Mera, Seabrook, Houston. Mas Musica". Got it on tape. I started rolling just before 6 incase anything happened. It went back to dead air right after. It should have said "Mas Silencio!". :p
