New format for 93.3 Huntsville

This isn't much of a secret anymore. Seems like everyone in the industry that I have spoken to already knows this, but for those who do not, here ya go! The new format will be........Country! From what I am told, the PD is already in the building. Maybe the third time will be the charm for country on that signal, especially since the move into Huntsville on their new CP is almost complete from what I'm told. I'm glad to see choices returning to the dial in Huntsville. 2 A/C, now 2 Urbans, and soon 2 Country. It was really becomming dull for a while there. Maybe this will force some of the existing stations to stop being lazy and get better in order to win.

Check again. There are at least 5 different country stations on the dial in the Huntsville area.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Choices? You've got to be kidding me. Another country station is the last thing this market needs.

So... do you think that Rick and Bubba will land on 93.3 after the format change? The indication from R&B is that they will be on a new affiliate in Huntsville starting in January... seems like 93.3 would be a prime candidate.

93.3 is Cumulus! They stroked a deal with Clear Channel!!! It looks like they are station jumping just like the screwed Birmingham!

I hadn't heard until after my post that it was with CC...

I hate CC as badly as the next person... but who wouldn't go for a top 50 market or two? C'mon guys... don't be hypocrites... they made a good deal (for them) and unfortunately the Rocket got screwed.. Honestly I never listened past 10am anyway.

The format should change to a rock station. It would be cool if it was a rock station, so it would compete with Rocket 95.1.

If the owners of the station could make the modern/alternative rock format profitable, then it could definitely happen. Every time I listen to the Rocket, it feels more like a classic rock station to me than a modern rock one.

I am aware that there are several other country station that you can PICK UP in Huntsville. What I mean is, 93.3 will make two country stations with city grade coverage in Huntsville. All of the country stations (except WDRM) that you can pick up in Huntsville are on weak signals and do not even concidered themselves Huntsville stations. For someone to go up against a power house like WDRM and even have a fighting chance, you would need a strong signal with city grade coverage like 93.3. If you look at the current ratings, no other country station (again except WDRM) even shows up with a share except for WQAH, which is classic country and even they have a rimshot signal. Thats because all the other country stations are rimshot signals as well. It's all about money for Cumulus, and country will bring revenue even if they don't beat WDRM. Rock will not bring the numbers needed to bring the revenue they are looking for either. The Rocket stays around number 5 or 6 every book followed by WTAK. If you brought a second rock station to compete, that would take numbers from The Rocket and WTAK, probably preventing all three stations' numbers from even making it to the top 10. You can't make money with numbers like that, although another Rock station would be cool, if done right.

I never thought of that. Either it's where I live or that I have a very good radio that pick them all well is probably why I think that there are way too many country stations in the market. Too bad I'm not a country fan.

I suppose in order for a brand new station to debut, one of the existing rock stations has to change to another format first, kind of like what happen last year with Birmingham's market.

Yea I'm not much of a country fan either but I welcome any station comming to Huntsville that will give this market more choices. It's better for the whole city all around. I'll bet money the new Hot 103-5 will take numbers from not only WEUP but WZYP as well because they are playing urban as well as some rhythmic. Unfortunately I think you're right about the rock station idea though. One of the existing rock stations, The Rocket or WTAK, would have to change in order to make room for another rock station to make money in this market. I just wish The Rocket would stick to current music and less classic rock. Then maybe we wouldn't be wishing for another rock station. We have a station to listen to if we want classic rock, we don't need them playing it as well. They need to be more true to the format they claim to be, Active rock. I'll say the same for WZYP. I wish they would stick to current music and stop playing all the crap recurrent A/C stuff they play all day. If we wanted to listen to that we have TWO other A/C stations to choose from. If your going to claim to be CHR/Top 40, then BE CHR/Top 40! Don't confuse your listeners as to what kind of station you are going to be. You can't play a ten year old song from Aero Smith and follow it up with Sean Kingston or Chris Brown or something like that. That's confusing! A Top 40 shouldn't even be playing anything from Aero Smith to begin with! Stations should always make it clear what sets themselves apart from the other stations in the market and show why you should listen to them instead of the other guys. If you go north to Nashville or south to Birmingham or even west to a small market like Florence, their Top 40 stations sound TOTALLY different than WZYP does because they know who they want to be, and so do their listeners because they make it obvious.
