New Format for WAJD 1390 Gainesville

They are now "Your Liberal Talk Station". I just noticed today so not sure when they made the change. Stephanie Miller was on when I was listening and they were promoting Bill Press and Ed Schulz.

So, what were they before hand. I run a radio podcast that reports on format changes, and none of the trades have this yet.

They've had lots of transmitter issues the last few years but they have been on pretty consistently for a while now. According to Arbitron they were Rhythmic Oldies.

I think they called themselves "The Best of Motown and R&B".

Liberal talk seems to work for NPR, but it's not been much of a commercial success anywhere, that I can think of. I know several stations that tried it and they all lost their shirts. It'll be interesting to see if WAJD can break out, but I'm not holding my breath....

Maybe they got paid to air the programming?

Gainesville... the destination of most traveling homeless people in Dixie. It must be nice to be known regionally for Gainesville's liberal approach to vagrantcy.

The polar opposite exists in Pensacola where earlier this week I watched the police handcuff two vagrants for jay walking. Since they'll never pay their fines those two will be wanted fugitives in Pensacola for a very long time. I wonder if that really works to keep them from coming back to town?

I don't think it does them any good to change formats every book. They must know that, too. For this reason, I am guessing that they are being paid to carry the new format.

At 1st they were Radio Disney then slient then oldies.

When they came on the air (late '50's?) they were country WPUP and then Top 40 as WUWU which did pretty well until 24/7 WGGG took over the Top 40 crowd. WDVH successfully switched to country but not sure how successful 1390 was after that.

WPUP, WUWU, WAKA, WKGR, WMGI, WDVH (1390), WZRC, and now WAJD has had mulitple formats over the years ranging from country, Top 40, beautiful music, all news, country again, urban contemporary, Radio Disney, Kiss 105.3 simulcast, and motown. It's programmed a little of everything.

Question...is WGGG 1230 even on the air right now, since the sports move to 850? Are they doing another sports network? I was in Ocala this weekend, and shoulda checked 1230 in the day.

WGGG is still listed on the WMOP website - www.espngo1.com - as the ESPN Radio affiliate for Gainesville.

OK but there is also www.wruf.com which morphs between 850 & 900....I have a feeling that they use 1230 for cast-off sports....Now back to the 1390 thread.

1230 and 850 are simulcasting, sort of. There's a few seconds of delay on 1230. I thought WGGG was going to be ESPN Deportes, but that hasn't happened. Sort of reminds one of the pulse 106.9 & 101.7 situation. WGGG's signal sounds weak, to me. I suspect it's less than full power.

On the other hand, WAJD sounded quite loud and clear yesterday, even after dark.....
