new format in okc?

I heard from several sources (don't know if it is true) that a station in okc will flip to urban ac after the new year. has anyone else heard about this?

Wow... Urban AC? Somehow I just don't see it. That's thinking wayyyyy too far out of the box for OKC's corp. radio operators IMHO.

My guess is it's not gonna happen!

But, it would be refreshing if it did happen.

Don't get me wrong... I would LOVE to see someone step out a bit on a limb and try Urban AC. I would most definately be a listener! I was hoping that 1140 would go that way full-time without all the other crappy talk shows they run there when they got the FM, but unfortunately that didn't happen. I think a little Class A that covered the market in this town would make a nice living playing the format.

My guess is still... NO WAY.

Country, rock, right-wing hate-blab, screaming angry white kids' tunes, bumpa thumpa pow pow (insert your multiple explicitives here)... etc, etc, etc.. It's the same, tired, old crap. They just exchange the boringness with the four groups around here from time to time..

Unless your talking about KYIS-98.9, I read somewhere that they're going to put on an Urban AC format on the HD-2 channel so you're gonna have to break down and buy an HD radio to listen to it. Unless someone else has heard different. I've heard a couple of years ago that Langston University was looking for a LPFM or non-commercial station in OKC and playing nothing but R&B, Jazz, and Blues with no Hip-Hop. Has anyone else heard of this?

Yup... They had things all arranged to do just that and then "the man" shut them down via politics at the school because they were going to be on FM and he wasn't at that time. At this point he would probably dislike it almost as much, but at least he's got an FM at this point in the game.

I just don't see how other major markets in the country have one or multiple urban formatted stations and OKC has struggled just to get one.

Simple. Oklahoma City has fewer stations than most markets of its size. Urban stations usually have a lower power ratio than other formats. So, the stations in the market will take formats with higher power ratios first. Most of them do fine. So, there's no incentive for them to go urban.

I heard it could be a Citadel station.

I didn't think about this, maybe Citadel may look at flipping WKY to Urban AC. I know they just recently went Sports, and besides does OKC really need 4-5 Sports stations. If that were to happen that would be very weird to assoicate the WKY call letters with an Urban format.

Wow.. Now there's a nice idea. WKY doing Urban AC..

What would be really neat is for them to give Charles NoTower a tower at 930. It's probably not going to happen, but I'd surely be a listener!

I once read that it was because the demographics in OKC don't support an urban formatted station. Thats why KKWD has always been far more mainstream than most rhythmics. It doesn't make sense because Tulsa has 2 stations and they have about the same percentage of African-Americans as OKC has.

According to Arbitron from their website, the Black population in OKC percentage wise is close to 10% Black and Tulsa is around 8%. I say both markets are large enough to do an Urban format. As far as KKWD they were doing well before hand, but I had a hunch that the higher ups at the station were making changes and stupid decisions causing the station to go down. I don't think they're too high on the format either. So it should be interesting whoever takes over KKWD along with KINB as to whether they'll keep the Wild's format or change it, which I would hate to see and it would not surprise me if that happened.

I would personally like to see Wild change to a straight urban format and go after Power 103.5. Or even swich to a urban ac format. BTW, does anyone know what is happening with the Doug Banks Morning Show on Power 103.5? I heard that it will be no more after the new year.

Wild was doing well because at the time, they were the closet thing to a hip-hop/r&b in the market. Their best days were in the days before ipods and zunes when radio was actually more relevant. Their big downfall was after the move to 104.9 and when they shifted their focus back mainstream. KJ always has and always will rule CHR/Pop in OKC. Wild needs to go urban and target rimshot Power 103.5. Wild is in a great position for this because their signal is much better suited for an urban format than Power's. If they keep the current format, it would leave the market open for somebody else to do urban and no doubt Wild would be the first casualty.

Word has it that once Doug's morning show ends in 08, Doug and the rest of the crew are still going to be with Citadel/ABC for some other projects supposedly, not sure what they are but some of the rumbles from other radio boards such as Urbaninsite.com,etc. that he'll be going back to an afternoon show which he started out at before moving to mornings.

As far as Wild going straight ahead Urban or Urban AC, that would probably be a good idea but I don't think that will happen, then I say and it will probably go Urban ;D
