New format on WKCI-HD2

After simulcasting the main 101.3 signal on HD2 for the better part of a year, WKCI has launched a format called "Sirens -- Songs for Women by Women." I assume this is a canned format out of Clear Channel's format "lab." I've been listening for about an hour and am hearing a lot of unfamiliar artists and music. The sound ranges from pure pop to progressive country (a kick-ass version of "Jolene" ... unfortunately, the songs and song/artist display don't always seem to match up, so I have no idea who the singers were) to rock to singer/songwriter AAA.

Interesting, although it may be a niche format without an existing niche to serve. Reminds me of the way some of the more obscure formats used to sound on XM before XM started to tighten its playlists and narrow its focus to push its appeal beyond music specialists.

Oops! Looks like "Sirens" isn't the format, just a specialty show. The format is actually called "Breathe," and while it targets women, it's hardly obscure and both genders are represented. Artists played in the past hour include Gloria Estefan/Miami Sound Machine, Shania Twain, Los Lonely Boys, John Mellencamp, Boyz II Men and Fleetwood Mac. Not sure why "Small Town" -- the Mellencamp song I just heard -- is a "female-skewing" song, but somebody apparently thinks it is.

In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter? I mean until more people get HD-equipped radios it's pretty much the program directors, engineers and those on the bleeding edge who are the only listeners on these channels.

wow bill...way to kill ther buzz.
what did you say when you once heard somebody mention this new thing they saw called M-TV....Who cares...it's cable nobody is watching.
ctlistener...I have been listening to it for a few months off and on just to see them work out the bugs...It's different, i give em that.

You have to be honest with the perception that HD Radio is as slow as a snail in the audience acceptance realm. I talk to a lot of people and I've heard quite a few of them say they're not going to race out and buy a new radio just to get "... the handful of new channels" with the "promise" of better sound. When I asked some of the high school and college students I work with they give various answers such as "I have my iPod, why do I need that?" or "they don't play anything good on regular radio". Simply put, I think it's just a little too late for the younger set to accept and not a great importance to the older generation.

I'll be honest, when I need to check out something on HD/HDx I usually borrow a rig from a friend who has already made the investment in one or I'll pop by one of the stations I consult that has one of the newer HD monitor boxes and tune in to the station in question. Otherwise, I don't see the value of plunking down good money that I could use for something else.
