I'm now one of those people who travels alot, in and out of state.
Wherever I go, I hear the same ole, same ole.

The classic rock station has the deep ballsy voice trying to be cool and telling you how wonderful they are.
The country station has the guy or girl telling you how wonderful they are.
CHR, AC, the same.

I've switched to NPR where depending on the topic, it can be good or awful.

The talk stations are nothing more than hate radio.
The GOP'ers hate Obama, The Dems hate McCain.

I've also noticed in just about every state, there are one or two exceptional morning shows.
After 10 am, radio goes into the "drek mode."

How bout a format of Great Non-Political Morning Shows?

Program the best of the best all day, every day.

Your thoughts?
 
VIABLE Format

I conclude it is very difficult to define something radio that is truly NEW. To me, the question is: What combination of elements common to audio capabilities would make a viable, fresh sound?

From my own travels I could have written much the same analysis as the message that began this thread. You point out that now and then you find a great morning show. Those morning shows are probably not something any dufus out in a cornfield with an automation machine and limited staff or no staff can emulate. Good morning shows seem to start with personality..... probably TWO personalities doing counter-point off each other.

Ingredients added for enhanced flavor will be the reporting of news relevant to your area, some pertinent sports results, road information like bridges that went AWOL overnight, ...... cooking ingredients many of us think should be readily available on the cupboard shelf of any broadcaster trying to cook something up. Any thing there new? No, same answer if you asked the question in 2000, 1990, 1980, 1970 etc. And yet if you find a heritage operation that has been "on their game" for 40 or 50 years now, they are still using all these ingredients, but air-checks from all those years would sound a bit different.

So, is there some magic ingredient that we have routinely failed to identify and include in the recipe?
