New "Gainesville" station

There was a story in this morning's Sun about WURB that hopes to be on the air by the end of the year. I looked them up and it is licensed to Cross City on 97.7 and is a C3. It looks like the tower is south of Bell. The format will be a blend of R&B and blues.

I think we discussed this on the old board. There are no coverage maps yet but is this another station trying to be Gainesville but with a signal too weak to make an impact?

Don't know the market well. If the station doesn't have a co-channel issue, in car listening should be okay if the antenna is facing towards Gainesville. Itlooks like the 60db is short 9 miles from the city center.

Gainesville is just outside the strong signal coverage unfortunately. And Magic 101.3 stopped being a full service urban like every other former urban in Florida (think 102 Jamz Orlando and X102.3 Palm Beach) when it went rhythmic.

Yes, the coverage map indicates that, but the station has decent ratings. So again I ask the question. What is the signal like in Gainesville. Does it have a decent signal for listening in the car.

WTMG is a weak signal in Gainesville and Ocala. It's less than a 60dBu in both towns, but it does cover the western parts of both Marion and Alachua counties. A car radio seek button will stop on WTMG only about 75% of the time in Gainesville and about 60% of the time in Ocala. That it does as well as it does surprises me since only car radio listening is practical in the major population centers. It cannot be received reliably on in-home receivers.

Regarding WURB, it also will have less than a 60dBu signal in Gainesville and nothing in Marion County at all. Like WTMG, it will have some western parts of Alachua county (think Newberry, High Springs and parts of Alachua) reasonably well covered, but without Marion county as well, the prospects are dim for any significant ratings performance. And then there's the minor issue of being 2nd adjacent to WSKY's, very strong C2 signal. The technical challenges for WURB are so steep that I would be very surprised to find that it had any significant impact at all.
