NEW GUY AT Q1075

All Access reports than disc jockey Maney gets the morning gig at 'HBQ. For those of you who are unaware, Maney was part of the morning crew in Sacramento that killed a woman in the infamous "Wee for Wii" contest". His ex-partner Lucas now does mornings in Phoenix. If I was a direct competitor to Q, I owuld make sure ALL the advertisers in the area were aware that he was responsible for killing someone. I am amazed at people in this business who hire murderers. UNBELIEVABLE!

Sounds like the 21st Century version of the old "WKRP" episode tag line by station manager Carlson, "As God is my witness, I swear I thought turkeys could fly."

I was wondering... has anyone heard the status of the case?

Shortly after this horrible event, it all got pretty quiet That often means settlement negotiations are on-going, but it sure has been quite a while. Still, if the case does go to trial, it will be years until the matter is finally laid to rest.

I can't find anything written recently on it. 'Even used that new-fangled "Google" thing all the kids are talking about. I'm thinking that Google may become quite popular...

Correction, HE didn't kill someone. It was the STUPID person who drank all the water who killed themselves IMHO. I don't personally know the guy and have never heard his show, but come on, anyone who does something that dumb and stupid to themselves for a $200 electronic item is a lost cause anyway. It's time people took some personal responsibility for their own decisions and actions. I mean come on. If a dj told you to jump off a cliff for a prize and you do it, do you really blame the dj. Geez.

So anyway, is his show any good. That's what I'd rather hear about.

You SHOULD hear his show. It's KILLER (really)! You should hear the clips of the "Hold Your Wee for Wii" contest where he jokes about not caring if someone dies because the contestants signed waivers. VERY FUNNY! The guy is an awesome talent and I can't wait for him to start killing in Memphis.

Wow.

Releases or no, the statements made on that aircheck would be pretty damning in a civil trial. I would bet it gets settled out of court.

DE?

So uh ... Goatboy -- you get turned down for the job or something? I mean you are entitled to your opinion and your views, but folks should also be able to make 'mistakes' and move on - yes this was a deadly one - but until all sides are heard and known judgement should be reserved.

Oh wait - I forgot where I am - we never withold judgement or blame - we break the rope out as soon as possible.

I'll probably never listen to whoever this is, but I DO want to add to this stream.
Any time there is a loss of human life it is sad. (for the most part-some people 'NEED KILLIN')
But, I must say, that for anyone dumb enough to put themselves at that great a risk to win a prize, cannot be left out of the "fault" discussion. It was HER fault she "assumed room temperature", regardless of how irresponsible and stupid the idea might have been. I'm no lawyer (we have some of those here, though), but I'd guess that any liability to the individual (or maybe even station) would be reasonably limited.
She wasn't tied down, held against her will by gunpoint, and forced to not relieve herself.
Nature always has a way of "thinning the herd," as they say.
Maybe this was just the "Killer Whale" eating up the sickly baby seal. It wasn't clubbed over the head in this case.

Now, a joke..."These two baby seals walk into a club...." (Stop me if you've heard this...) ;D

Amen - AMEN!!!

I kind of agree, it is mostly her fault for participating knowing the risks. However, it disturbs me to listen to the air check...they don't seem to care that what they are asking the contestants to do is potentially dangerous. They are laughing at the fact that someone may die and it doesn't matter because they signed wavers. I am disappointed that they brought him here and took Karson away. It's so not a fair trade.

I wonder if her THREE KIDS would agree that she "needed killin'"

HAR HAR HAR

I also love how Maney's bio at the Q website just kind of lists that he hung out for a while in Tucson and California before moseyin' on down say-outh for some ribs. No mention of being part of the MOST NOTORIOUS RADIO PROMOTION IN THE HISTORY OF THE MEDIUM!

Seriously, for ALL the apologists on here: How many radio promotions have you heard of that resulted in someone DYING? Hmmmm....

DANG!
READ a post before you respond!
I never said SHE needed killin'
There are people that do.
I didn't hear the aircheck and don't need to, to know that someone who kills themselves by not urinating so as to maybe win a video game system, may NOT be the sharpest knife in the drawer.
Trying to pin it solely on the station or the jocks involved is ignorant.

That'd be akin to successfully suing Smith&Wesson because some gangsta "popped a cap in yo' ass" with one of their 9mm handguns.
Thus, we could sue Ford and Chevy because that's what our loved one was driving when THEY pulled out in front of a semi.

Not necessarily trying to be cold...but she brought about her own death. ::)

If I were a Flinn or the GM, I would be real concerned if the litigation matter has been settled. I would hate to have my new AM jock taking frequent time off with trips to CA for depositions, hearings and a possible trial. In addition, I would hate to hire this talent with a pending trial, then a large punitive damage levied against my new employee, and my insurance company finds out such a liability is on my payroll.

Insurance companies can give owners a real headache about situations like this. I doubt Flinn has one of those multi million deductible liability policies.

It has to be settled.

So what should he do?? Tell me - if all the legal action is being handled, then it's personal business. Besides, usually when people lie on their resume's it's to add some excitement. How would you list it as anyway?

You honestly don't think 'all things' were taken into consideration with this?

Should he come out on the air and tell the world what has happened?

Dude - your horse is just a bit too high for your saddle - may wanna tighten it up a bit and think what YOU would do if you were in HIS place. And don't give that crap that "Oh I wouldn't be a part of something like that - it could hurt someone' -- NO, you'd go forward, do your job and let the lawyers do theirs.

People do stupid stuff all the time - it's very very very sad that this woman died - BUT no one held her down and poured the water down her throat. She did it on her own - and it was unfortunatly fatal. And to think that those involved were not effected is just silly - it'll be with them throughout their lives. Now if they didn't learn anything from it, that would cause for concern.

But you strike me as the ... naw ... that would be a personal attack.

Ok - ranting is off - flame away if you wish.

Q1075 didn't take Karson away - there's a whole 'nother story there - that isn't mine to tell.

Interestingly, there was one in the mid-1970s with facts that, frankly, were not as egregious as this. Plaintiff won, and the award was upheld on appeal.

And, therein lies a problem. The case, which seems to be pretty close to being on-point, is from the California Supreme Court, and would likely be controlling law should the case reach the appellate level. Doh!

I have said before -- this case should and will settle out. Going to trial is not in the interest of the parties. But, it's not my call to make.

Figures! There is ALWAYS more to the story. And I'm sure they weighed out all their options before bringing Maney here especially with what happened in the past, but still...I want Karson back! :D
