new guy on YNZ?

I heard a guy on Oldies 100.9 on Friday night. He was awesome! Tight, topical, funny bits - (he had a great line about the Pirates opening night). Where did they find him? Think his name is Tim Kelly.

I heard him too.I agree with you.I think it's Tom Kelley.Did you hear the ad for the season finale of Will & Grace on Thursday night on the Tom Kelley show?I wonder how that got in there. His voice is kind of familiar.Has he used a different name in the past?

His name is Tom Kelly, and he most recently did PM drive at WBIG in Washington. I hear he recently moved to Maine to chill and enjoy the lifestyle. I've heard his work on the air, too. He is phenomenal.

Tom is a long-time radio guy... eats, sleeps and breathes the biz. he was and still is an incredible talent. i first met him back in college at Grahm (in Boston) in the 70's. we are lucky to have him at Oldies 100.9 - he was a victim of the abandonment of the oldies format in Washington by Clear Channel, the progression outlined in the articles below. 15 years of a stable, major market gig gone just like that. now his newest challenge is to see how well he does at being a Norm Avery (this old house) kind of guy.

nice thing is that with the in-house production services offered on Western Ave (Blue Wave Creative), he brings an awesome set of pipes and a very creative range of deliveries to the mic to help keep clients happy and his wallet somewhat less empty.

Thanks, Chuck, for the links to the newspaper stories above.

I love the line in the third story which says (paraphrasing here) that Clear Channel dropped oldies in favor of classic hits, because they did research that showed a need for the format in DC.

Oh please.

That's what everyone says when they change format. "The research showed a need". Yeah, right. Research. Sure. So how many cocktail waitresses did the PD ask?

I believe in format research. But the fact is, if you need research to fill a hole in your market, then that hole is pretty small.

If the hole is big enough, it's been pouring the rain in on your head for a long time. And you don't need research to know when to get a towel.

Thanks for the URL's Chuck. I too find humor in the "research showed us" quote. A quick check of the 25-54 numbers in Washington shows that their "research" was likely wrong. I heard Kelly again on the way home tonight. (I travel Boston to Portland a couple times a week) he's certainly consistent. I think the whole station is sounding better than it has in a long time.
