New guys at 11Alive

I see that WXIA's new investigative reporters, Ross McLaughlin and Shawn Hoder, start today as the Center for Investigative Action. They've been a team in Seattle and D.C.

The new Commuter Dude, John Gerard, also begins today.

One not-so-new guy starting today is Doug Richards. Mr. Live Apartment Fire returns to TV news on a part-time basis.

With these new guys coming in, who are they replacing? In other words who has recently left the station to make room for the new guys. I know two weather people left earlier this year, but who else?

The new team looks good, much better than the droll, boring non chemistry people they have daily. I like Jill and Karen, I wish they could keep Chris on in the mornings. Chesley reminds me of that little boy at school who was always acting up. :D

They are once again retooling the format of the morning newscast. Apparently, they are dropping most of thehard news (at least the negative stories). I have not watched in the past couple of days, so I don't know.

The new Commuter Dude has been there for the past couple of months doing promos.

And don't expect WXIA's CIA team to do hard-hitting investigative stuff a-la the WAGA I-Team. They will focus on consumer stuff (a-la WSB-TV's Jim Strickland). The only hard-hitting investigation WXIA has done recently is the kid with autism that was abused at school. They don't go for that kind of stuff.

I hope this helps WXIA. There are people who don't want to hear about crime 24/7.

I really think 11Alive is on the right track with the way they want to carry their newscast. Karyn's Try it Before You Buy it segments, Valerie Hoff's Ways to Save. These are stories that inform and help you make consumer decisions. I think once they figure out the formula for the rest of it, like the Commuter Dude (who appears to be making a difference already with getting those One Way Signs put onto streets which were inadequately marked) and the CIA team, they will provide good competition with a news broadcast that is different and not like the rest of the other stations. Having the live chats with doctors and medical experts about the new health care plan is something unique that the other stations aren't offering.

I like CBS ATLANTA's Wendy Saltzman and her investigations. CBS ATLANTA stepped up there investigations with the "We Ask The Tough Questions." Talk about 11 Alive changing there newscast, CBS ATLANTA has made a total 360 as well. Will they ever add a male anchor to join Stephany Fisher at 4pm, 6pm and 11pm?

To answer tlyle's question, I don't think the CIA guys replaced anyone in particular. WXIA had talked for several months about having investigative reporters start this summer. The station had a pretty big hole to fill in that area, and I'm still not satisfied that they've covered what should be a core responsibility of every journalistic outlet: hard-hitting investigative reporting. However, I can also understand Mr11WXIA's view (no bias I'm sure ;)) that WXIA is doing something different. I think stations should try to differentiate themselves, and there is a segment of the population that doesn't want to hear that much "bad" news. However, the ratings speak for themselves.
