New Haven Spring Ratings

Clear Channel conservative talker WELI went down probably for a couple of reasons:

1. They axed the news department for a minimum local headline service from upstate New York. I think the newscasters originally didn't look at a WELI coverage map because I was hearing stories about the northern corners of the state instead of New Haven. Also, they quote TV station web sites a lot (why don't you just tell me to get my news from the internet). It would sound more credible if they just mentioned TV station call letters. They have missed the boat on local breaking news stories like the political arrests in North Haven that happened on two consecutive days.

2. Rush, Sean, Laura and Glenn have become less relevant to people in the New Haven area since the Dems took over Congress. The talkers are out of step with the majority of voters here and basically have nothing new to offer.

WAVZ, in its first book since dropping progressive talk, is a no-show as ESPN Radio 1300 despite advertising in the in the New Haven Register sports masthead every day.

KC101, WYBC and WQUN down, WPLR up. Hartford stations WPHH, WHCH and WWYZ went up while the Fairfield County stations went down.

ELI's numbers are where they were last spring as well..not a major loss at all..and definately not the biggest problem at CC New Haven.

KCI pulling a 3.7 in their home market and being passed once again by their Hartford counterpart WKSS, ouch.

As much as Cox may have "drained" PLR of their programming segments, they still have that New Haven local feel, which pays off. I have to say, it's refreshing to see the Country and Rock stations on top. (take that however you wish). :)

No local news at WELI: News dept. was shut down last year due to company-wide budget cuts. New Haven wasn't the only cluster affected. That said, it's unforgivable to ignore local news.

Ratings down at WELI: 77 WABC booms in along the Shoreline but carries a lot of the same shows. That's why people get their right-wing talk from 960.

ESPN 1300 a no-show: Major mistake for Clear Channel to dump liberal talk in a liberal city.

But wait, there's more! 102.9 DRC-FM is top-5 playing Good Time Rock 'n Roll. That is the format CBS-FM in New York should have been doing.

Um, no. WAVZ didn't show up in the ratings as a liberal talker either. In fact the last time they showed in the ratings, they were still play Nostalgia Music. That was 4 formats ago. (It went from Nostalgia to sports to liberal to sports again).

Hot 93.7 does very well in New Haven also Country does well too. Also I see Power had a big jump from 2.6 to 4.7 could that be why the small drop from WYBC maybe.

Hartford stations must have had the advantage of diary placement.

That's the most rediculous thing I've ever heard..lol..no offense

There are only 3 major New Haven FM's and their outcomes weren't that off from the norm. PLR was on top, YBC fell a little but nothing they can't get back, and KCI tanked as usual.

A lot of the diaries MIGHT have been distributed in northern sections of the county but that should almost give a better shot for the New Haven locals as PLR and KCI have towers near the parkway and north of that (Hamden).

It is also hard when the books only come out twice a year for a market like New Haven that gets major competition from Hartford and Bridgeport.

>Um, no. WAVZ didn't show up in the ratings as a liberal talker either.

They did show up barely in some books, and this was with zero promotion and no local news. WAVZ now has ads in the Register every day and the Coach does local sports just before the top of the hour. I thought they would have had a 2 with the new ESPN format. You're right about no-show during the Fox Sports days after nostalgia.

Its HUGE how much WWYZ went up in New Haven. Both of the Bridgeport stations (WEBE and WEZN) were down and both Hip-Hop stations in Hartford were both up there. WPHH went up almost 2 whole points!!

As a result, WKCI is down yet again in their own market, does anyone know what KC 101 is doing wrong??

what's ridiculous is a book anaylsis based on 12+ numbers. ask the folks at ybc if their outcome wasn't far off from the norm.

Some things to keep in mind:

There were no shortage of things to talk about during the spring Arbitron ratings period in New Haven. Immigration reform, the New Haven ID cards, all gave talk show hosts something to talk about.

And let’s not forget the April floods (still during the book) and I am sure I am forgetting something VERY important…

So why then do you think did New Haven’s news/talk station go down in the ratings? Could it have been a lack of unbiased local news? Could it have been a lack of any local news?

Maybe a lack of talent? Local or otherwise?

We report….you decide.

As for WKCI it may come down to the number of shows that are "voice tracked." The station had some real "edge" when Mary and what's-his-name were on. Now?

As for WAVZ it has gone through so many format changes there isn't an audience left. I'm also surprised there are any people over 70 left. Apparently when they swapped (years ago) from Frank sinatra and standards to heavy metal they did it early in the morning. Imagine you went to sleep listening to "Frank" and woke up listening to....

But CC never spent a dime on local promotion for the "liberal" talker. They are doing ads for sportstalk hoping for an audience. Good luck fellas...building an audience takes time and these days no one wants to wait two books.

If most of the Hartford stations (at least those on West Peak) did really well, New Haven stations generally stayed flat or fell a bit (except for WPLR), and Fairfield County stations tanked, what does that tell you?

It would indicate (IMO) that this is an issue of diary placement (or returns) that came disproportionately from the northern and eastern portions of the market. That would certainly not be good for WYBC (as an example), and they did slide a bit. For one, WYBC does best when the diaries are skewed toward New Haven proper and points southwestward. So do Fairfield County stations.

On the other hand, WPLR's strongest areas (in general) would be in northern/eastern NH County, Middlesex County and southern Hartford County. This seems to be consistent with these 12+ beauty contest numbers. In fact, the entire book seems to be what you'd expect from heavy placement north and east of New Haven.

So, it might be best not to read too much into it - at least not until we see a couple more books (and demos from those books). ;)
