NEW HJY BILLBOARDS

I noticed them this weekend. They're an orange gold type color and say "ROCK ZONE AHEAD".They've ditched the usual black background and hot chicks. The cool thing is the billboard displays the song and artist playing at the moment.Of course I don't know who they think they're competing with but they could steal some listeners from B101 keeping their call letters in the forefront.

Yeah but the Coast billboards are for Ryan Seacrest. You should be promoting your morning show or the station as a whole. Not afternoon drive no matter how much name or face recognition he has. The jury is out on his radio success when it comes to this syndicated show. He's a cost cutting move and nothing more.

Other than Charles afternoons in Providence are pretty generic. Maybe Coast figures a good way to bring people over to try out their new format is to convince them to give Seacrest a try if only out of curiosity. What kind of billboard could possibly convince people to listen mornings or middays? Tune in Seacrest, hear The Killers instead of Whitney Houston, and maybe stick around for the other shifts. Either that or they don't know what the hell they're doing over there as usual.

I LOVE these billboards. I've seen the one for COAST promoting the current song playing, outside of Seacrest. I have turned the radio station 4-5 different times already as a result of seeing a song playing I'd like to hear. It's brilliant.

It's a good concept but I think it's geared towards really active listeners who button-push constantly and refuse to sit through any song they're not in the mood for or don't like. I wonder how much button-pushing and scanning really goes on with adult listeners. If I see HJY is playing Free Bird and I'm in the mood to hear it I might tune in after seeing the billboard. I don't know if Coast flashing the song playing would have the same effect since I don't know if the audience they're going for is sitting in the car juggling a car radio, ipod, music on cell phone, CDs, etc just to always hear a song they like. We here are either in or into radio from a different viewpoint so listening habits here are a horse of a different color.

The new Bonneville rock outlet in L.A. (The Sound) has a billboard that displays the song currently being played.

Kinda like RDS meets HDTV.
