New home for the A's?

What is the status of the A's search for a new flagship to replace KFRC? I like tuning into the A's and would like to know for next season. Thanks.

Believe me, when the season is over, you will definately hear about their new home. Whatever station gets them AND the Oakland A's will want everyone to know. They will advertise heavily to let EVERYONE, even CapeFish, know where they are on the Radio.

But what if they don't, 610? How is someone supposed to plan for next season without this information *now*? Do you think we should rely on a press release or a newspaper article -- which may or may not be forthcoming -- announcing it somewhere down the line? What if they wait until November or December to make the announcement -- will that honestly be enough time for listeners to make plans to tune in?

What happens if the radio station that gets the rights decides not to buy advertising in the newspapers, or decides not to promote it on the air, and we're left having to tune in several radios next April just to make sure we don't miss Opening Day.

That's probably not a bad idea. I'm heading right now to buy a few more radios, just in case. Do you think five will be enough, or should I pick up a few extras?

What if the A's decide NOT to broadcast their games on the radio?
What if the A's move out of California?
What if the A's sit out next season?
What if there is a massive earthquake and the colliseum is destroyed?
What if, what if, what if.........

BossRadioDJ's repsone was pretty funny.

But, there will be no announcement till after the season.

At this point the A's could go anywhere from a below .500 season to winning the World Series, so there is no point in them even talking to anyone right now.

The big question is, what stations are there out there that will want to do 162 games, plus pre, post, and call in shows?

KNBR is out, KNBR1050 is up for sale and out, KGO is out, KCBS is probably out, 910, 960, 560, all not exciting possibilities.

I think that once PodCasting on 1550 runs its course in the next couple months that they can flip to mostly sports. Still Infinity owned, so they have a relationship with the A's. They have been doing USF basketball for years, so they can keep that up. Sabercat rights should not be hard to get. How strong is the signal in the South Bay? Could they get the Sharks soon? Add in a local host or two for a call in show with ESPN, Sporting News, or Fox Sports programming rounding out the schedule. Even throw in a Don & Mike syndicated type show. I think that station could at least break a 1.0.

Its the middle of the season for god sake! Stations are up for sale now and the landscape of radio is changing. My advice: wait until someone announses someting.

Re: KYCY/1550 and Sports

Rats! For once I was being serious!

But you're right about 1550 in every respect. Infinity is working on a new construction permit that would move the transmitter over to KLOK's site in San Jose, increasing power to 12kW days and 16kW nights. They could move the old KFRC simulcast there and go sports-oriented the rest of the time -- A's, Sharks, Raiders, USF -- the daytime pattern covers the Southbay sufficiently, blowing up toward San Francisco.

If not KFRC's Oldies, it would be a great spot for ESPN Radio, which doesn't have a Bay Area outlet right now. Sorry, KNBR running "All Night with Todd Wright" and some weekend odds and ends does *not* mean they are an ESPN affiliate; the day they start running Dan Patrick, Colin Cowherd, Mike & Mike, etc., that's when they become an ESPN affiliate.

Of course, putting Don & Mike on in the afternoons is okaaaay by me.

The clock is winding down on the KYCY podcasts, with maybe three months left (give or take a week or two) until we all know what's going to happen.

Or not.
