Since all of these radio companies seem to be following one another....just like lemmings off a cliff....do something astounding...think for your self and have LIVE, LOCAL JOCKS....instead of VT crap from out of market.....BE DIFFERENT!

Can we have a rule around here where people can't start threads until they have 50 posts? Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease?

Do you read the board, Johnny? Every other thread covers this subject.

Have you heard about this new thing called the wheel? Pretty cool stuff, huh?

Not a problem.
To date, 3 million jobs lost, businesses small and big are going out, 900 car dealers are expected to be gone by summer,
advertising revenue wayyyyyyyyyy down.

I trust you have a boatload of money and you'll be writing the checks from The Bank of Dreams.

I believe The Bank of Dreams just recieved an infusion of free cash to the tune of around 350 billion dollars so maybe this wouldn't be totally out of the question, ya know?

Ha!

You know that dream isn't as far-fetched as it seems, but it would take downsizing of a different breed...

Reduce signal saturation. (For those who need it spelled out: take the non/low-performing stations off the air.) :-\

Kind of like a game of Monopoly. If you own the purples, the oranges, and the blues, and put a couple of houses on each, you aren't as likely to win the game than if you focus on one color and build them up to hotels. Maybe I'm being too simplistic, and basing real-life on a rather unrealistic game, but then again, maybe it's not as unrealistic as one might think. 8)

There's another option as well. Bring back sign-offs. There's really no need for 7 different radio stations to be running all night long especially if they're all on auto-pilot. This can save some bucks in electricity I would imagine.

This option is even better for listeners who listen to radio actively or while driving, especially for AM. Instead of barely or not being able to discern anything on a frequency mushed up by multiple signals, they could instead hear one of the few remaining ones clearly, even if it were a state or two away.

Before the usual people say so, I will say it for them: "Nobody uses radio that way anymore, and the advertisers don't care about out-of-market."

Listeners don't care where an ad dollar was spent, and particularly for national brands, it doesn't matter whose signal you heard an ad on.

Those advertisers should be in the newspaper or on billboards. These media don't have the problem of excess "reach".

The other good part is that for instance I would know that 1080 is "Oak Lawn" in the daytime. and "Hartford" at night.

If I don't care for Hartford, sign-offs on other channels might permit me to hear Buffalo or San Antonio, where I might like the content.
Anyting is better than mush every night of your life.

will.....i didn't mean to anger you.....if you don't like the subject of the thread...don't respond to it....no reason for you to call my intelligence into this either...relax...this isn't rocket surgery....

If I don't respond, then you'll think it's acceptable to start useless threads about topics that have already been beaten into the ground.

What's the old bit of humor: I went to a boxing match to watch the fights..... and a hockey game broke out.

I don't know the two of you, but I get the feeling you know each other and have a beef with each other. That part of the conversation could be handled behind the scenes using the Private Message feature of this board.

Now, Johnnyp66- I have been know to put some change of direction, some effort of "thinking differently" into a topic so let me, at the risk of sounding pompous, play "older brother" for a minute.

Your original post included this: "....do something astounding...think for your self and have LIVE, LOCAL JOCKS....instead of VT crap from out of market....."

Looking back on it now I think I recognize some sarcasm there that I didn't recognize earlier. If you are going to be effective with sarcasm, you may have to put it in the middle of the road where it cannot be ignored so easily.

If we were all invited to serve on a panel discussion at a broadcasters convention, or to testify before the FCC and congress, I would also via some mechanism (sarcasm or otherwise) point out that something more warm and fuzzy than ho-hum voice tracking is desirable. But how many radio stations hung onto "live, local jocks" ten years too long and found themselves as business failures in the end.

To use the terminology "live, local jocks" indicates that maybe you are not as innovative as you see yourself.

Jocks would indicate music. The music industry appears to be in a tailspin financially. Is it possible that radio has a problem in that it has it's buggy still harnessed up to an out-of-steam music industry.

Why live local, jocks instead of live, local news
or live local talk
or live local public service
or live local sports
or live local recipes
or live local play-by-play of the wheat harvest

Of all the possible programming content things we might put on a chalk board if we were in a room brainstorming, being a JOCK may be the ONE form of programming that is better voice tracked than it is live and local.

The subject line is: New idea for radio.....
I'm still waiting. Tell me some that would be a NEW IDEA.

Johnny:

Don’t be offended... Will’s a good guy. He’s just being pragmatic. He’s right because the subject has been run into the ground and it as gained very little traction. The current crop of cluster managers, are so use to being the regional governors for far flung empires that, “being local” hasn’t really been on their radar. Things have changed, technology has advanced, and the economy is tanking… When some of the smoke clears…all of the companies in the radio business will find it necessary to rethink radio… and eventually will.

But it hasn’t happened yet because it’s counterintuitive to rethink something while riding out a steep decline. That’s why the car companies are having a hard time making the fuel-efficient car of the future… Because sales are down 45%… There’s not a lot of time or money for brainstorming and retooling.

I agree with your premise. You are right, some “different thinking” is just what radio needs right now. But… it has to be the right kind of “different thinking”. If a fairly solid radio company took a leap of faith at this very moment in time; and really took a close look at culture playing it’s self out in their community. To the point where they really have feel for their market and target audience… And made the right innovations, with crisp, reliable, relevant, sellable local content. I believe that, said company would be successful… But that would take a huge leap of faith… which is tough to consider on a good day. But taking a leap of faith… when some people are leaping out of windows on Wall Street. (Or faking plain crashes anyway). It’s a lot to expect right now. The industry has been pretty beaten up and doesn’t have the nads for it at the present time.

In the Burlington/Plattsburgh market Hall, the company, which is the most local, is the most successful… A fact that proves your point… I know for a fact that it could all be done, and done well, with smoke and mirrors… But you need smoke and you need mirrors. (I’ve got the blueprints right here in my laptop.)

Hey Will… sorry brother for lengthening this same old thread subject… But it’s right in my wheelhouse… and the dead horse I’m beating… is just in a coma, and could get up and kick me again at any time.

Goat Rodeo Cowboy … I like your style… I agree… Voice tracking could be a lot better… In fact if some thought were put into it… It could be freaking great! And it doesn’t have to be recorded in a studio all the time.

What the heck, I'll chime in briefly. Much ado about nothing...sure, it's an old topic that's been talked to death. So you click on it once, read the first post, and never return. Granted, time is precious, but it's what? Ten, maybe 15 seconds out of your life?

FAIL

I flamed him because this has nothing to do with radio in Northern New England. He cross posted this in the Boston forum too. We have programming and business forums for things like this.

Thank you everyone for your responses....both positive and negative that's what this place is all about and any other message board.....LIVELY DISCUSSION! Yipppeeee.....
Will....no hard feelings I am not a radio veteran...nor have I been on this board very long....I just remember as a kid hanging out im my basement listening to Warren Bailey on WLNH(parade rd.) and winning stuff on a saturday night....that is how radio should and can be again....why do these radio companies need so much upper middle management? VP's for this....VP's for that....it's crazy! I'm in my 40's and radio was a dream....I did get to realize my dream...and hope to again someday.
