New IHeartRadio App: Me No "Like"

I downloaded the new app, which has a lighter graphics scheme. However, I don't like the fact that, if I wanted to save a new station as a "favorite," I needed to log into Facebook in order to do it. How about the 1% that doesn't have a Facebook account? Suppose Facebook goes the way of Myspace one day, CC will have to put out another version of the app!

Fortunately, the stations I saved as favorites before I downloaded the new version of the app are still accessible.

Yes, I noticed this immediately for the web player as well.

I don't use Facebook except for a fake profile I used for the Slacker Premium trial. I used that account to try out IHeartRadio, but I will never use it beyond the first day unless they remove this silly restriction.

Interestingly RAIN, the fairly well known newsletter about Internet radio made by Kurt Hanson, has come out in defense of this practice. I am starting to wonder if anyone over there actually thinks before they type or include stories. They have been releasing a lot of useless opinions lately and have been missing quite a bit of what is actually happening in the industry.

They're even prompting people who access streams of CC-owned stations to login with Facebook, too? Wow, "silly restriction" indeed, Casey.

Totally agree with DtotheJ! The Facebook question that you get upon login is cumbersome and I am glad that I haven't tried to save any favorites yet.

I have a FB page that I don't use much and I sure don't care to publicize my listening habits! And, I sure don't want to have to tangle with Facebook in order to stream a radio station!!! This is absurd and it's one of those "improvements" that is anything but.

I call it Icrapheart radio. How come my locals keep comonig on when i got an out of state station tuned in on a timer run setup.I dont like the app.CC go back to the drawing board.

As I wrote earlier, the app (thankfully) saved all of the previous "favorites" that I preset on the app before I downloaded the upgrade. Had I known that I would not be able to save any more stations as "favorites" without logging into Facebook, I would have tacked on a few more beforehand!

And the Facebook "question" is so annoying that, when you return to the main menu to select another station, you are once again prompted to log in (provided you haven't yet, of course).

Bob Pittman was just named the new CEO of Clear Channel and embraces iHeartRadio. I hope he figures out that this Facebook prompting business is a boondoggle and fixes it.

I just went to Iheartradio and selected Oldies106.7 Portland, Oregon and it came up in a snap without any reference to facebook at all! Problem solved? mmmmm..The scan feature is really cool, station to station in a snap too. Way Cool...

Are you upgraded to the new version? That's when I started to get all of the Facebook prompts on the IHR app.

Interestingly, on the Iheart website they have a "why Facebook?" link. If you follow that link, one thing may catch your attention. It mentioned about how IHeartRadio is committed to protecting your privacy and then says "iHeartRadio will not use your Facebook information for any reason other than improving your experience." What a joke.

@Casey: I'm already "improving" my iHeartRadio "experience" by not using my Facebook info with it! ;D

@WPPC: Do explain how you "tweaked" your app.

The logic behind it is they need a way to store favorites... I am guessing by linking it to a facebook app they can easly store data without building their own user management system... This does not surprise me for a mobile app.. alot of apps use facebook for login/info storage.

Oh .. and you ask why cant they just store your favs in the app? well part of having each user with a login (in this case logging in via a facebook app) is they will know what you favorite so they can tell which of their 'brands' is getting listenership. (Which is all part of building their online digital media empire)
