New Imaging For Kool 101

And it does not include the "good times, great oldies" tagline that's been associated with the station for many years. I did hear a liner that used the "greatest hits of all time" line. The tempo of this imaging package is, shall I say, a bit downtempo from the previous imaging.

Freightliner - I know you browse these boards. Does this mean the "oldies" era, for all intents and purposes, is over at WKNL?

No worries DJ... Work in progress. Not abandoning '60's tunes. Higher rotation of '70's and some '80's likely to come into the fold in the near future as well as new jingles (way overdue !) Obviously you caught me playin' with them during the 5 AM hour. Nothing get by you Diamond Joe !

Actually, I was listening in the 7 AM hour when I heard the new imaging. Then when the old imaging resumed at 8 AM, I was like, huh?

Thanks for saying right off the bat that Kool 101 won't be phasing out 60's songs. I always thought that you were able to, for lack of a better term, get away with being an "oldies" station since New London is sort of an exclusive ratings market. That being said, the more (music), the merrier. And I suppose it's been a long time coming for a new imaging package, as well... but it'll take some getting used to after hearing the current jingles for many years!

WDRC-FM hasn't phased out the '60s either. But the number of actual '60s titles on the playlist has been slashed drastically. Is that what's going to happen at Kool?

Not dumping a lot of '60's titles....just slowing the rotation of 'em in the week's ahead.

Would the ratio of 60's songs per hour to 80's songs per hour on Kool 101 be about equal when all is said and done?

And if I could do the math from CTListener's statement, it sounds like DRC still plays 60's but they just run a fixed number of songs from that era into the ground.

@Scott: I can't speak for Jim Reed (freightliner) but from the apparent preview of the new imaging that I heard, I didn't hear a single reference to the "Good Times, Great Oldies" tagline. I'd anticipate more concentration on other positioners ("The best music ever made"; "The most music and the most fun") once the new imaging (and with it, the new playlist tweaks) is in place - but that's just one P1's opinion...

Well, either Mr. Reed's doing some more beta testing, or the new Kool 101 imaging has officially gone live today. And at the moment, they're playing a song I've heard on Kool for the first time ever: Queen's "Another One Bites The Bust" - perhaps contributing to the new playlist modifications that was promised in this thread by Reed earlier...

Thoughts on the new playlist, which was effective Friday: It's not just an increase of selected 80's tracks (e.g. The Fixx, The Knack*) but a lot of classic rock staples, as well, such as "I Want You To Want Me," "More Than A Feeling," "Carry On Wayward Son," and as I write this, "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions" is playing. It's as if a classic rock station in the New London market blew up and Kool tweaked their playlist to try and attract those listeners - though, in the end, I suppose attracting listeners appreciative of music from that era, classic rock or otherwise, is the ultimate goal here...

Also as of Friday, I noticed that the daily 10 AM/10 PM "Beatle Blocks" are now kaput.

So basically they're now stepping even more all over their classic hits sister station, 98.7 WNLC...

KNL is still very much pop-based while NLC is still very much rock-based. While they share some audience, they also both have large pools of listeners that they don't share. The stations have always been a good combo buy, or either has been a good flanking buy with WCTY. Updating the KNL playlist helps maintain the audience and helps to bring in new buys.

Bring back WTYD! Heavy rotations of Neil Sedaka, Fleetwood Mac and Belinda Carlisle........

Ahhhh the good ol days..... Tide 101 FM.....!

~ Crazy Jay. :)

You'll probably hear the latter two artists in semi-heavy rotation, albeit with tracks that "test" better... ::) And what I wouldn't give for an aircheck of the old "Tide 101".

If I look through my box of old tapes I may have one.... :) I certainly have a lot of WRCH/WSRS/WMAS recordings from the early 90's....! WTYD never came in good from the Lebanon/Willimantic border though.... That pesky Village Hill to the south blocked the signal pretty good....!
