NEW INDIO PIRATE

A pirate has hit the air in Indio on 103.5 calling itself "cool radio" playing everything from Sinatra to current hits. Seems to get out as far as Thousand Palms, but not into Palm Springs.

Can't hear it today at 54 and Jefferson. Is it on every day?

Cool 103.5 seems to be 24/7 now. Last Thursday the Desert Sun published a letter to the editor praising the station. Then last night KESQ-TV did a full feature story on it with the reporter driving around the valley listening to it to find the signal's hot spot. It was located on Fred Waring Dr. in Indian Wells but the reporter was not able to find the transmitter or studio.

I've never had the stones to fire up a pirate station. However, I am working on a pretty cool project involving internet radio and classic airchecks. I'm running it off an old Audio Vault machine. I wont let the stream go public until I get a processor inline. I want the best sound possible. Looking at maybe an old 8100. This is gonna be fun --- Stay tuned!

What kind of budget do you have for a processor? I may be able to help you out...

One thing I might mention - for Internet radio you want to nix the pre-emphasis protection of FM processors. They had to do weird things to make the sound loud and not overmodulate on cymbal crashes, etc. The program-operated release time of the 8100 was very transparent for FM. I'm not going to try to push any one type of processing over the other - that's sort of like religion & politics. But I believe it's possible to make internet radio sound better with other processors, thanks to the lack of pre-emphasis.

I'm working with a guy who's programming a progressive country/americana station and we've kind of been through this already. After trying a bunch of different things, we settled on a little Symetrix SX-208 compressor/limiter. It has the same program-operated release time and gives the ability to set compression ratio so it's not quite so harshly limited. We only use about 5 or 6 db total compression and all of the program material is mastered carefully for proper level. You can listen for a long time and not get fatigued at all.

Like you, we're not ready to release this to the public yet either. The DSL service feeding it is too unreliable (it's in rural Grass Valley, CA) but if you want to check out what it sounds like, here's a link:

Optimods work great for proccessing

Hey Woody! Good to hear from you. Hope all is well for you!

I bought the new Omnia 1a Processor for my AM signal and it's REALLY impressive.. I am going to try to process my Inet station with it in a week or two at night after I power down. We'll see..
