new internet station wiht questions

Hello, I am a new internet station with some questions. First what are the best places to grab new music? Where can one obtain some cool imaging stuff, only being an internet station? The problem I run into is "your not terrestrial radio...let me tell you where you can shove your web stream!" If you don't have the best stuff, they'll just listen to something else, so any help is greatly appreciated. Of course, all my licenses are in order.

"...what are the best places to grab new music?"

Amazon.com is a great source. If you build up a substantial audience, over time, artists and labels will begin to seek you out.

"Where can one obtain some cool imaging stuff..."

Create it.

"...only being an internet station?"

You will never succeed with that kind of attitude.

Don't let "You're just an internet station" discourage you, most internet broadcasters program better than terrestrial stations. And, agree on Amazon.com, it's where I get all the cool new tunes for my own music collection!

As far as music goes:

Amazon.com is a great place to pick up cheap mp3s. Also, there are a number of compilation releases that are free. Just look up "Free mp3s."

Unsigned artists are all over the place. Check Facebook and Myspace for bands.

There are a number of places that have imaging. Radio Daddy can get you started as far as finding the right imaging.

Being an Internet broadcaster has it's advantages, like music venues, interviews, and more. Plus Terrestrial radio stations are now looking at experience in Internet Radio as a plus.

Hope this helps,

Re: new internet station whit questions

Another great place for free music for station is Airplay Direct, http://airplaydirect.com/ . You can sign up there and have access to a lot of new artists in many genres. It's mostly Indie but there are a few established artists there also.

Jordanen,

We had a discussion on this very question a few months back: http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=181107.0

Basically, you contact the labels (which takes some doing) and ask them to set you up with a plaympe.com account. They will then email you whenever they release a new single. You then download it to your plaympe player app. It's pretty decent. The only issue is getting labels to hook you up. Allaccess.com has a database of label contacts. They try to keep it updated but you'll find you generally get plenty of bounced emails. keep trying! They require a free account to get access but they are a great resource for broadcasters!

I run a country internet station and have had pretty good luck with most major labels and some indies. I can't speak for other genres/labels.

Other services like this include dmds.com and the already-mentioned airplaydirect.com. There are some others but mostly have only indie content.

I had a friend who works at an in-town fm station do some imaging / vo work for me. I then produce them up. It works well and, in my case, it's free! Helps to have friends in high places!

What format are you running? Gotta link? Share!

Thanks!

MusicAlley (Formerly the PodShow Music Network) is a FANTASTIC place to find some great music as you'll not only find great music but you'll also be supporting indie artists as well :D

Radio Daddy is THE place to go for imaging. Just tell the people there what you're looking for, what you want to have said, etc. & they'll do the rest :)

Hope this helps.....

Cheers :D

One thing I'd like to share with you is this. Never take a "I'm so small no one will take my operation seriously" attitude.

When I ran a Part-15 over-the-air station with a range of just 300 feet, I managed to get the late Ellie Greenwich (songwriter of so many 1960s hits) to do a 30-minute interview with me. She was fascinated by the concept of Part-15 radio. And I called up the offices at Holland-Dozier-Holland one day and got their receptionist to do an intro saying "This is Holland-Dozier-Holland, where the writers of Motown hits galore reside, and if we're ever in Binghamton, New York, we're going to listen to Radio Michelle."

So, you know, anything is possible with the right attitude.
