New KAAY Blogspot!

I posted this elsewhere, so forgive me if I did wrong, but...

ALL are invited to join us at the new KAAY blogspot!

http://mighty1090kaay.blogspot.com/

This is in continuance of A. J. Lindsey's old blogspot, after he passed away in May...and we'll be referring to his blogspot from time to time:

http://kaay1090.blogspot.com/

As we all know, some things on the Internet tend to be lost if the bills aren't paid, so several of us listeners, former deejays and programmers have made the effort to preserve the history and audio that was KAAY back in it's Top 40 and Beaker Street heyday!

Please join us, drop us a comment and enjoy!

Re: New KAAY Blogspot! (UPDATE)

BTW, if anyone would like to send in material for posting to the blogspot, you can drop me an e-mail at:

[email protected]

...and this includes ANYTHING regarding your KAAY or Beaker Street listening experiences!

To be sure, NO personal information will be posted on the blog unless you specify to do so.

Thank you! Visit often!

Bud, thanks for the update. I worked with A.J. after his days at KAAY for a radio station (KCLA) in Pine Bluff and wasn't aware that he had passed on.

Justgohogs, we would dearly love any stories you could relate from KCLA and working with A. J.! Please e-mail me at my address above...thanks!

Didn't Howard Watson work at KCLA before his midday days (don't recall the air name) at KAAY? Pretty sure I remember visiting him at KCLA while I was still in high school and working at KWAK.

Thanks, Bud50. I was already out of state, rockin' my first college year in Tulsa, when Howard went to KAAY but remember a home trip and hearing him say (enough to indeliblize it on my brain) "Ol' dad, in a brand new pad." As I was mentally re-hearing that from around 48-50 years ago, it finally hit me: Harrison rocker KCWD's Russ O'Neal sounds amazingly like Howard/Ken did.
BTW, how freakin' long did they run that "Baby Elephant Walk" tease before finally making it known that KTHS was no more and they were now "The Mighty 10-90, K-double-A-Y"? Being a top-40 neophyte at KAKC (and swearing I'd never freakin' do that teenybopper s**t, right up til the time KAKC hired me!) I was really amazed at how KAAY did some really good top-40 programming most of the time...but then just dadblame STOPPED!!!! long enough for a half-hour news block, including 'Farm Service Director Marvin Vines' 3 or 4 times a day.

And when did they do the midnight flip to hippy'dom with "Beeker Street"?

Beaker Street began in 1966 and ran until 1972, as per "Clyde Clifford":

http://beakerstreet.com/history.htm

Then, they did a last show in 1985 and still later, "Clyde" went back on the air Sunday nights on one, then another FM station there in Little Rock...its still going on from 7PM until midnight, Sunday nights now on The Point 94.1 FM....

Can I quote you for the new blog, kudzooter?

Bud

How many "Clyde Cliffords" were there? Seems I remember, KAAY always had the same name on the air in the same time period. Once, home from TU, heard a guy with a voice about as weak and raspy as mine, talking about how he'd had a bad cold and didn't know if he'd ever totally recover. Later heard from a KWAK buddy that that guy was the replacement for someone who'd had a Howard Clark or Danny Dark type voice.

Feel free to quote me on anything, Bud...just remember the risk to you that referencing The Moi Dude might bring, yee-hawwww.

If memory serves (and cut me some slack here because I survived the 70's) there was only one Clyde Clifford on air at KAAY, my friend Dale Seidenschwartz. The real Clyde Clifford was, I believe, the comptroller for Lin Broadcasting. It was kind of an inside joke to take the names of Lin executives for on air.

Clyde left KAAY in late 1972 to join the rest of us weirdos at KLAZ...the progressive rock version. KAAY owned a service mark on the name, so he was forced to go on KLAZ as J. P. Clyde. The J. P. stood for "Just Plain". Clyde did take a poke at KAAY by opening his show most every day with Jimi Hendrix' "If Six Were Nine", the intro of which was used as the Beaker Street theme at the time. Over time, the J. P. in the name was dropped, and he became just Clyde, or in some cases, Uncle Clyde, possibly because he was the only adult we had at the Z at that time.

Clyde was replaced on Beaker Street by Stuart McRae, who I had the pleasure of working with during my short stint doing the shift before Breaker in 1977. Stuart was a great guy, had an incredible ear for music, and an excellent on air personality. The only problem was he wasn't Clyde Clifford. That, plus the fact that those of us at KLAZ had introduced listeners to what that music sounded like in FM stereo helped to spell the end of Beaker...sadly.

On another note, I also worked with A. J. Lindsey at KCLA, not once but twice. Must have been a glutton for punishment. It's really sad to hear of A. J.'s passing, as he was one of the best people I was ever around, and a real trip to work with. We also had George J. Jennings in the building at that same time, and he and A. J. were really fun to watch as George took an huge amount of pleasure in teasing A. J., especially concerning what the "A. J." initials stood for.

Ahhh...good times.

inthebag is correct...as far as I know, there has only been one Clyde Clifford. As for the voice, I have a recording of him with a terrible cold, so that may have been what was heard on the air!

inthebag, would you contact me, please? [email protected]

Thanks

Bud

This is a great thread! I had to add my story:

I grew up in Minnesota, but KAAY came in like a local at night. I remember being 6 years old and discovering that at night, I could hear stations from other states. If I tuned just to the left of our local rocker WDGY-1130, I'd get a station from Little Rock.

Music was pretty much the same as WDGY for most of the night. But if I stayed up REALLY late (which I wasn't supposed to do), I would hear wind chimes and some strange music that wasn't played on any of my local stations! "Beaker Street!" This was where I first heard "White Bird" by It's a Beautiful Day.

Hi, MN. I occasionally post here too, along with your Iowa board. And I literally work across the hall from mighty 1090.

Unfortunately, it isn't so mighty anymore. Here in Conway, I get splatter from KRLD at night. During the daytime, it's only slightly stronger than KARN here. I realize KARN's transmitter is closer and they're lower on the dial. Still, it's 50kW vs 5kW.

The skywave signal isn't what it used to be, either. Last year when I lived in Minnesota, I noticed I could still hear KAAY up there at night. But it's nowhere near as strong as it used to be. Has the ground system rotted away, transmitter not being maintained, or ????
