New Kemptville Ontario station testing.

The new station in Kemptville Ontario (CKVV-FM) is up and testing on 97.5 MHz.

http://www.fm975kemptville.com/

From my location, about 30km south west of Kemptville, using my Luxman/FM-6 combo, it does not interfere with semi-local Watertown NY's (more powerful) WFRY-FM 'Froggy 97'. In fact, if my antenna is not pointed directly at Kemptville, WFRY wipes it out. Not sure what issues non-directional set ups will have...

Looking at the map on RECNet it appears they have a southern null in their signal. I was always under the impression that a station was not protected outside it's own country and while CKVV's service contour stays within Canada, WFRY's goes into Canada quite a bit. It doesn't get close to CKVV's but is WFRY's 60dbu contour in Canada protected at all or does protection stop at the border? If its only protected in the US then why would CKVV want to null their southern signal unless they were forced to.

Personally I think the station assignment is a little too close, but as the station owner you want your station to reach the largest area possible.

WFRY is not protected on Canadian soil, but CKVV has to protect WFRY on US soil, and I believe the null is there to maintain the required desired/undesired signal ratio at the border.

In simple English, it might be difficult to boost the signal strength?
I hope they have plenty of local ad backing. (from those who believe no one will travel x distance to shop anyway...)
The National ad revenue (ie Tide gets your clothes clean) might suffer a bit.

I think what Scott is saying is that without the southern null, CKVV would interfere with WFRY *in the U.S.*.

So yes, you couldn't boost the signal in the direction of WFRY. You might (or might not) be able to boost it in other directions.

Scott, do you know if there's a limit to how directional an FM station can be in Canada? (I mean, something analogous to FCC 73.316(b)(1) and 73.316(b)(2))

I don't believe Canada has an analogous rule. Industry Canada seems to encourage the use of FM DAs, while the FCC seems to merely tolerate them.

I can get a very po0r signal in downtown Ottawa on my G8. Keep in mind I can see CJLL 97.9's transmitter from my house...so I shouldn't be able to hear it at all. I don't get it clear enough to get stereo. I noticed last night in front of the house if I moved to one side I could hear WFRY and if I moved to another, I got Kemptville.

I'm in Ottawa today...and, as I've driven around, what a mess. It's stomping all over the TIS (CIIO) around Dow's Lake/Experimental Farm, while, mixing with WFRY, in the Hunt Club/Prince of Wales area.

I've yet to tune in, while driving in my own neck of the woods, south of Kemptville, but it won't be pretty.

CIIO has been off the air for over a year now.

I was in Orleans tonight visiting friends and it was loud and clear there.

An application was submitted to the CRTC on December 11, 2011 to rescind the license for CIIF 97.5 Ottawa (the dark French language tourist info station) and replace it with CIIO which has been displaced by new commercial stations over the past few years (first on 96.5 , then on 99.7). The decision has yet to appear on the CRTC site, but judging by Tincap's remarks I would say approval has been granted.

I am absolutely certain. I live 10 minutes walk from Dows Lake. All I hear is a mix of Kemptville and WFRY, and both are VERY weak.

The stream is up and current, but I wonder if it's only online for now. I should be able to hear it without any problem like I used to if it was on air.

mimo, I could not get CIIO at Dows Lake (Preston onto Prince of Wales). It only started coming in (mixing in with Kemptville) as I approached Prince of Wales/Heron, becoming the dominant signal at Hog's Back, but dropping off very quickly (long before Fisher) after that. As Dan mentions, CIIO appears to have moved from its old frequency (as part of a swap). I certainly heard it on 97.5 and it certainly seems to be very localized, at this time. Testing perhaps?

BTW, while driving about, down here south of Kemptville, just north of the St. Lawrence, I haven't encountered any interference problems, as WFRY remains the dominant signal.

That would explain why I don't hear it. I know right after CJOT went on 99.7 I was getting CIIO for a couple of months on 97.5 but then one day it disappeared. This sounds like an interesting mystery. I remember they used to mention their frequency, yet I didn't hear it once on the internet feed. Testing at a low power is a real possibility.
