New Kentucky Radio Tribute Site: LKYRadio.com

After building tribute Websites to Louisville's two great Top 40 AM stations of the '60s and '70s (WAKY and WKLO), I wanted to salute other pre-1985 Louisville radio. Stations like WHAS, WAVE, WINN and more. Since the "L" in "LKYRadio.com" could as easily stand for "Lexington" as well as "Louisville," we decided to also include stations from Kentucky's second largest city (which happens to be my hometown).

On LKYRadio.com you'll find airchecks, jingles, photos, and surveys from and information about Louisville and Lexington radio in the pre-CD, pre-consolidation days; the days when "cluster" didn't mean a third of the radio stations in town. 1985 is the rough cut-off date for exhibits there, but if something cool pops up from later, we'll consider posting it.

We're looking for additional airchecks, photos and promotional material from pre-1990 Louisville and Lexington radio stations for LKYRadio.com.

When we launched LKYRadio.com in January, we were planning to go up through the mid-80s, but we've decided to include items up to 1990-ish.

If you can help us in preserving radio history from Kentucky's two largest cities, please contact me through LKYRadio.com.

Thanks!

I have a question, John Quincy. I live in Lexington and drive by the WLAP-AM building everyday to go home (Russell Cave Road) and I always wonder why it says "WWY" under "WLAP" and "WMXL". I've kinda researched it and can't find any evidence that there was ever a station in Lexington with the call letters "WWY". Can you tell me why its on the building?

Thanks!

At one time 100.1 had the call letters WWYC. The building has been vacant for quite awhile and my bet is the "C" simply fell off the building. :-\

Winger is correct.

BTW, WWKY used to be the calls of the Winchester AM (1380). They later moved to 790 AM in Louisville.

It's a shame that building isn't being used anymore, except for transmitters and such. Of course, I remember it when it was new in 1974 when WLAP and WLAP-FM had state-of-the-art studios there, after moving from studios on Walnut Street. The last time I was in there was to visit a friend in the early '80s and the "plant" seemed pretty nice at that time.
