New KFI Tower...Oops!

R&R is reporting that a good-sized section of the new KFI tower
toppled this afternoon during the erection process which began
last Saturday. (No Viagra jokes, please. ;))

Bummer. That will likely delay the return to 50 gallons even more,
what with OSHA investigations and the like.

Tower was up about 230 feet before coming down.

They are however not using the La Mirada auxiliary but have moved to the former KIIS-AM / KTLK-1150 site in Montecito Heights. If I were the people working in those nearby warehouses I'd be getting my job application out elsewhere. Those buildings are way to close to the tower.

I reviewed the tower site pictures on Dino Darling's website and it appears that the failed guy wire anchor was an elevated column. That column appears to be held down to the concrete pad by four small anchor bolts; two of which look to have pulled out of the concrete. I'm not a structural engineer but this guy anchor looks to me as if it was not engineered for the load that it was intended to handle. Good thing there were no serious injuries.

Did Handel start using Burton Cummings' "Stand Tall" as the bumper music yet?

Neither your screen name nor your remark are particularly amusing in a situation where there could have been serious injury.

Very well stated David!

If the company building the tower would have had a real "DeadMan" at the base of each guy wire anchor the tower would be still standing and KFI would be this much closer to have the project done. Use real quality parts and get the job done. Any real electrician knows what a real "Deadman" is. This is sad really sad for Clear Channel!

As MY pictures show, the elevated guy did not fail. The back-stay turnbuckle assembly did. Actually, its my opinion that the threaded rod failed. Look at them again. The original dead man in the ground was being used.

The tower was stacked out to almost 300'. Section #15 was added just before lunch. The #3 level guys are at 288' and were being brought up into place when the threads failed. According to the dyno, they were only at about 1000# of tension at the time.
