Parker was working some really long hours doing both PD and AM Drive. I'm sure he'll enjoy getting a little more sleep.
______________

KLDE

Have heard them online and they impress me as very much a "wallpaper" radio station. They're there but nothing exciting or compelling at all-- ever.
They're just 'there' (and ranked consistently OUT of the Top 10, sometimes out of the Top 15 in Houston).

Thoughts?

Re: KLDE

Based on what I read about Cox on this board do they really have a chance? Sounds like every station in that cluster is destined to be just "there."

I just find it amazing that Cox does SO much for their San Antonio stations and yet they don't seem to give a tinkers damn about the stations in Houston.

However, the only market they seem to really care about is their home-based Atlanta stations. They have made such deep cuts in many markets, that it seems like all they care about is the bottomline and not their image.
______________

I do like the "tweaks" KLDE has done in the music. It's refreshing to hear an "Oldies" station play songs like "Tumblin' Dice", "Stairway to Heaven", "Layla" and "Free Bird" along with the standard fare of 60's and 70's Top 40 Hits. "Tumblin Dice" and "Layla" were both Top 10 songs and shouldn't be considered the exclusive property of a Classic Rock station.

On reelradio, there is an aircheck of WQXI AM in Atlanta from 1972 and they were playing Album Oriented songs along with the standard Top40 fare of the day. The KLDE of 2005 sounds similar to what QXI and other Top 40 stations of that era were doing.

KLDE/Cox

I will say this about Cox- they recently brought in new Market Managers, so perhaps this will make a difference.

It's a stretch to characterize them as "not caring" about markets outside Atlanta. Of course they care. But if they don't have strong leadership in any particular market, they'll get what they have in Houston- a handful of stations all ranked out of the top ten. Sad, man.

Re: KLDE

Maybe I was a bit harsh in my assessment this morning. Call it lack of sleep and the damn basketball game last night. I also like KLDE's tweak, but they can also do more. Maybe now that Ron is off the air, he can focus more on PD duties and what he can do... musically, image, promotions, etc., to make the station even better.

I also think KKBQ's new morning show is a BIG step up from what it has been over the past seven years, since I moved here. They did a really smart thing, but trying to go after younger demos, who cannot really relate to Hudson and Harrigan (KILT). We'll see if it pays off for them. They still need to dump Lia at night and go back to a local show. Remember, this is Market #7, you will get more success, which leads to more revenue, with a good local jock (Spend money to make money).

Country Legends is great from a music standpoint, but they need more people than just Tubby. I'll hear music that I haven't heard in years, and I forgot who did it. It would be nice to hear a jock on there to tell me who it was. I realize that you can go to their website and find out that info (most of Cox's stations do provide that, which is also a feather in their cap). However, when I am speeding down 290 on my way to work, I don't necessarily have access to the internet and I forget all about it when I get to work or home.

We have all voiced enough about KHPT, so I will spare everyone another rant about it. It is the concensous of the boards, that the format needs to go and they need to do something else with it.

I'll try not post in anger anymore. I'm not saying that I won't, but I will make an effort.
______________

Agreed. It has only been in the past couple of decades that stations declared the Oldies / Classic Rock split, each attempting to have exclusive playlists.

I dug out my tapes of KAKC - Tulsa from the early - mid 70s and you are correct. Perhaps there was a broader spectrum of music played than the 300 songs we hear now.

Re: KLDE

Maybe, just maybe there is a glimmer of hope for Cox Radio in Houston. If they are tweaking KLDE it is a sign that Cox realizes they own the station and possibly could turn the station into an excellent Oldies station.

I have voiced my opinion about Country Legends forever. Cox blew an excellent chance at having that market in SE and E Texas if they had staffed the station 24/7 with live air personalities.

Sounds like KKBQ is serious about the Country music battle for #1. The new show on KKBQ mornings is the first big change Cox has done in Houston in ages.

KHPT, enough has been said, we all know where 106.9 belongs.

Could Cox want to be a contender in Houston radio? Sure would be a 180, but definitly welcomed. Or is Cox just trying to build up the stations to a more decent level of programming and ratings, so if or when they sell the Houston cluster Cox Radio can get more money for the stations?

Re: KLDE

Decent has worked for Cox for the last few years.

I'll spare KHPT comments as rants about that station have been saturated.

KLDE has made some fairly interesting changes to their playlist and I'm glad to see that they're doing something to try and keep the station alive.
I'm not the biggest fan of Cannibal and the Headhunters, Roy Orbison or oldies in general, but I would hate to see this format leave the Houston dial.
I must confess--I have my weak spots when it comes to oldies. I love a lot of the music of the 50's and 60's--thus I like having the oldies option.
I posted earlier that KLUV could see the same fate as WCBS and KCBS recently have. Despite changes in personel, word is they're still fair game for the chopping block.
I don't know about KLDE. Maybe Cox can do just enough to keep this station around another few years.

I agree with the Country Legends comments--no quibbles there.

I haven't had the chance to really listen to Tuttle and Kline, but I'm going to do it.
I generally don't like country music (save Johnny Cash and Willie), so I probably wouldn't listen voluntarily during the regular hours, but the little I've heard shows promise.
I know country music pretty well (huge family--lots are rednecks (go figure); lot of rappers too (weird), and 93Q has good programming for their format. It's about as good as KILT.
