New KLOS PD

Gotta love how quickly the Sound swoops in to score some PR buzz at KLOS' expense. Cynthia has already accepted their offer to spin records on their It's Your Turn show this Sunday at 6:00 pm.

Well at least that is what Don Barrett reported last week at www.laradio.com. But when I tuned in this weekend, I found Val Kilmer on playing what he wants instead of Cynthia (The "Fox that Rocks" for all you oldtimers) Fox. What a disappointment.

No way they could do it that fast. It's not a "live" show, so if anything, at the earliest, her appearance will be this coming Sunday.

Nonsense. They could have made it a live show and the PR would have been well worth the time and effort. And we're not talking a lot of effort here either. Have the PD and a perhaps a few jocks and a board op come down to the station, welcome her, give her whatever she wants to eat and drink and let her intro the tracks (which would already be cued up for her). She is a professional, no additional prep necessary. They could have even done an interview with her, talked about the KMET glory years. The Sound always tries to imagine they are carrying the KMET legacy torch, so the could have made it even more of an "event".

I'm sure they'll have her tape it at some point, but the PR coup is all in the timing. As a comparison, KFI arranged to give Jim Ladd a three hour show within days of his departure from KLOS. That was a stroke of genius on Robin's part that was properly executed.

Yeah, but Cynthia wasn't canned until Friday afternoon and word didn't get out until almost five. No time to adequately promote an appearance 49 hours later.

The worst thing would be to rush her onto the air and have everyone (especially her KLOS listeners who didn't even know she was gone yet) miss it.

Number 1, it wasn't a stroke of genius because that 3 hour show on KFI was all about him. There was nothing new content-wise, he ran out of things to talk about, so he brought in someone he knew from 1968 so they could talk about Jim. KFI got limited press as well, it was mostly press aimed at industry insiders, not KFI listeners, and those that did call weren't KFI listeners. Number 2, KFI didn't hire him from that audition, and no other FM station gave him any room to do anything from that audition. He was still on the beach for a couple of months before XM-Sirius even showed interest.

The Sound rolled out the red carpet the day she was let go from KLOS, invited her to do a My Turn and it was all over the internet by afternoon. They don't need other jocks to be there to pave the way for Cynthia, tape a My Turn and leave. The PD is NOT going to show up on a weekend just to greet her. And again, it's prerecorded, and she only does her voice parts. Yes, she's a pro, but the Sound isn't going to change how they do their specialty programming, and go "live" just for her.

Do I think that it's lost PR, a little, but it would mostly be for industry types and super fans. The masses that listen on a Sunday could probably care less. What I really think will happen is that they're going to actually try to hire her, probably for weekends, but would full-time be nice? Yes, and an improvement over some of the weaker full-timers on the staff.

Both Calguy and Michael make some good points above. I agree that the Ladd show was horrible (as I posted at the time), but the genius wasn't in the show itself, it was about striking while the fire is hot, getting buzz out on the street and getting listeners who have never listened to KFI to tune in and sample the station in a non-revenue generating Saturday night slot where no "harm" could be brought to the station. I don't think that was ever considered to be an audition. Like most DJs, Jim does his best talking when the records are playing. The show proved that to be true.

I also thought about the fact that maybe the show didn't go on because they may be considering hiring her, in which case it doesn't make sense to have her on the air, even in a guest capacity, while negotiations are going on.

I guess what I am really lamenting is the absence of the "Radio Wars" in the modern era. Once upon a time, radio stations would do whatever it takes to one-up the completion. I have never been one to carp about large corporate ownership and deregulation (I think they have, on the whole, served radio very well, even if I don't personally like it), however a definite casualty is that the "radio wars" as we once knew them do not exist. I suspect this is due to corprorate culture, HR policies and procedures manuals, legal departments, etc. So much less fun is allowed. Out, WKRP; In, Clear Channel suits.

I too recall the old radio wars. I participated in a few myself. But that kind of stuff just doesn't happen anymore, like when Billy pearl walked to KHJ, or when jocks & programmers frequented Martoni's or Nickodell and glare at each other from across the room. Nobody does really cool stunting anymore. Guys don't do shows sitting on flag poles or marathon's for charity anymore. In most markets there aren't that many stations programming the same format and going head to head. That's because of the fact that you have 800 station groups and 8 station clusters. So everyone goes for a hole and tries to fill it. Plus, the staff's are so small, there's no one to insult any more! It's sad, but that's the way it is and I lament the loss as you do...

I do and I don't.

The vast majority of listeners even then thought the rivalries and jabs were too inside baseball.

The Real Don Steele had a 40 share in teens in 1968. That means 60% were listening to someone else (I loved him, but I knew a lot of people who thought he was obnoxious).

Yeah, Robert W. walked up to Emperor Hudson at Martoni's, handed him a map of Des Moines and said "You'll be needing this in six months", but ultimately it was jive. Morgan and Hudson became buds, it didn't make Morgan's show any better, and Morgan spent more time torturing his own teammates (Charlie Tuna, for example).

Sitting on a flagpole doesn't make good radio. Neither do marathons for charity most often. I'll tell you the one memorable exception. Here in Phoenix, during a cold snap, with nighttime lows in the 20s, Bruce Kelly lived and slept on a street corner for two nights, broadcasting live from that corner and taking donations to buy blankets for people. It worked because it had heart and because it was directly related to the cause.

And they still do relevant stuff. Here in Phoenix, all the Clear Channel morning talents spent the entire day after their shifts making public appearances at grocery stores around the Valley, each with a fireman's boot, collecting for the widows and children of the 19 firefighters killed in Yarnell.

It wasn't as good then as we remember it. And understanding that makes it clearer that it's better now than we give credit for.

Here is what Cynthia said on DB's www.laradio.com site

"...I'm grateful to Dave Beasing of The Sound who has invited me to be a Guest DJ on the My Turn show Sunday July 28th at 6 p.m. Whooya Tooya!”

Whoo-ya indeed. Aboluly.

Cynthia Fox on KSWD: New KLOS PD

I missed Cynthia Fox's appearance on My Turn, this past Sunday on KSWD, The Sound 100.3.
Does anyone know if there is a link somewhere where we can stream a recorded version of that show?
The prior week featured Andy Summers of the Police, which also sounds like an edition of My Turn I would like to listen to a playback of.

Cynthia Fox with her turn on "My Turn": http://thesoundla.com/?sid=7516&nid=43 - includes Soundcloud link to listen!

Thanks for posting. I couldn't hear it on the day it aired. Unfortunately, the songs themselves are scoped out, which is unfortunate as Cynthia picked out a few good ones. I am sure it has something to do with music licensing rights (this is a topic that deserves much more attention than it gets, but for now I'll just leave it with the thought that it is a shame the music and radio industries, which should work symbiotically, can't get together such that people can the radio content they want on demand).
