New Knoxville FM

Actually, you haven't either....What's the frequency?? you couldnve given that in the initial post.

After reading this message, I headed out and tuned in 96.7 to see what this new station is all about. Immediately I heard "Don't Cry Daddy" by Elvis and I thought finally someone is bringing back oldies to Knoxville radio. But sadly no. They are 96.7 Merle-FM (don't we have enough stations here named after people?) with a classic country format. Do they really think they can compete with WIVK with such a horrible signal? They should have gone oldies.

Curious, Who owns the station?? ,I remember reading some time a that it was bought by M&M Broadcasting )Which was Ron Meredith which Owns WYSH-AM in Clinton Anyone know for sure?/

I doubt they're trying to compete with WIVK. They're "classic country" not "country." Almost called WIVK pop country there, so used to talking about WXBQ. Anyway, just how bad is their power?

They have a relatively new transmitter, so I can't imagine that being the issue.
Tune it up I say. It has knobs and levers and dial thingies and stuff.

96.7 WMYL...licensed to Halls, a recent move-in from Harrogate.

I was told that the actual city of license is Halls Crossroads. Which is funny since it's not a "city" ::)

Driving from UT to West Town Mall, the signal was "picket fencing" and never stopped on "seek" at any point. Meanwhile WIVK is solid.

Hey Marino, glad to see you can work a dial, good point. I am the biggest WIVK fan/supporter you'll ever find, but please explain to me again what WIVK has to do with the new classic country station? That's right, NOTHING!

I listened to this station for the first time today. Just how does "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac qualify as classic country? It played back to back with Tom T. Hall and that was followed by Toby Keith. At least WLIL and WIVK know how to be consistent. I've never heard Fleetwood Mac on a country station before. How about some Ozzy?

It's on the same tower as 95.3. 1,900 watts, vs. 91,000 for WIVK, antenna is a lot lower (~500' vs. ~2,100 for WIVK) and a few miles west of most of the Knoxville stations. (though OTOH WIVK is a ways to the southeast. With the rough terrain in Knoxville a few miles in tower site difference can be as dramatic as 15dB difference in power...)

The "city of license" doesn't necessarily have to be an incorporated city, if the applicant can show it's a legitimate community. (what makes it "legitimate"? I guess the lawyers and the Commissioners will have to answer that...) WCVQ 107.9 is for all intents and purposes a Clarksville station, but the city of license is Fort Campbell, Ky.. There is no such city: the station is actually licensed to the military base. There's another station in NC that's licensed to Camp Lejeune, not a city.

sounds like basically they are copying what WLIL used to do years ago...play nothing but old country on 45 RPM records? SO where is their studio?

Hell, country radio plays Shania Twain, Kenny Chesney, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Rascal Flatts, why not play Fleetwood Mac? It's closer to country than the above-mentioned artists and I use the term artists loosely. Fleetwood Mac will be or was on CMT this/last week with Little Big Town on CMT Crossroads, well Lindsay Buckingham anyway. I suposse it could work, if put between the right stuff though and Toby Keith is not what I would put it next to, so basically I agree with you. Now will someone please explain to me what in the world WIVK has to do with this low power classic country station? I highly doubt they are trying to compete in the least and the format is different! It would be like me running a pop station out of my basement and saying I'm going to take down WXBQ.

Fleetwood Mac gets played on Nashville's WSM-FM 95.5 The Wolf.

Good info Marino, that's interesting. I hope to never hear Fleetwood Mac on a top country station, not that it's not good, just doesn't fit the format, but like I said, it's better than half the junk you hear on there now. I've always wanted a country/rock/classic rock/southern rock station, sort of like half the WQUT playlist and throw in some Shooter Jennings, Hank Jr, keep the Fleetwood Mac, stuff like that. Or maybe just an "outlaw country" station as satellite radio is calling real country these days. That might catch on, but the rock mix idea probably would never happen and be successful, although maybe a thought for a terribly struggling independent station, maybe it could catch on. I know I'd enjoy it.

A lot of "non country" artists have dabbled in country music and many have done it well. It's not that the music isn't good, it's just that it doesn't fit the format. Fleetwood Mac can be heard on a half dozen other stations, and frankly that's where people tune when they want to hear them. I wouldn't go to an Italian restaurant for fish and chips.
